The Ministry of Defence revealed yesterday that they had made a vehicle seem to completely disappear in trials last week.

Military experts predict that vanishing tanks will be used on the battlefield by 2012.

The sun

Looks like a good development at first sight but will this actually be that useful? once the tank has taken the first shot surely it's position will have then been compromised and this equipment will then be of no use from then on?

Yea but imagine if say the enemy soot 1 tank and it becomes visable but it aint the only tank there, and because 1 tanks now visable the rest of them make themselvs visable, u'd have the enemy [SNIP] themselvs. It'd be similar to the battle of waterloo.

The prototype of this vehicle was displayed a couple of years ago. It made it into the papers at the time. It had been parked outside a certain government building in London and got a parking ticket.

It may be able to hide from an enemy advance over the plains of wherever, but it was no match for a traffic warden!

Some one posted roughly 6months ago that they saw(well kind of) a stealth tank while walking their dog or some thing around bovington Dorset.
The individual claimed he was walking down a gravel road when he heard the sound of an engine, he claimed an invisible tank drove past him kicking up the gravel and leaving a dust trail. He got ridiculed and i even think a mod labled his thread with the FAKE.
Hmm this man was taliking the truth and got laughed at

I tend to not believe anything from "The Sun".

Maybe that's just me though....

Hmm…interesting. Well, I'd like to see some links for those if possible. I'd have a much easier time believing a story like this from a credible source.

Very interesting, its not invisibility but adaptive cammo. There are rumors that the next generation recon aircraft already have such a system, it diplays an image of what is behind, under or above the aicraft on the opposite surface. But in todays modern armour combat arena, visually sighting a tank is almost a thing of the past. Millimeter wave radar, mass sensors, IR sensors and EM sensors will all still pick up a cammoed tank.
Still very interesting.
A couple of years ago I saw a DARPA demo film of adaptive cammo's for infantry. Shot in an urban combat setting, in the clip you start out by looking down a street, with side walks running along brick buildings. At first you dont see anything till the soldiers, 3 of them, start to move along a wall. At first it appears as a slight shimmering/distortion of the brick wall. As they get closer, about 5 meters you can see the outlines of the soldiers forms moving along the wall, while their garments are changing to match the coloration of the brick wall behind them. As long as they moved slowly they were almost invisible, you dont really see them for sure untill one of the soldiers turns his head and looks directly at the camera, and you can see his eyes. It was a very compelling clip.

Adaptive camoflauge isnt exactly anything new....the japanese have been playing with it (and not just the military) for years, probably the same with our boys but then again that pesky OSA puts a stop to that.

I heard about this about 5 years ago on a "Weapons of the Future" program or something. I never thought they'd achieve their goal that rapidly though. Pretty wild stuff.

10 years from now.... solders in combat in stealth invisibility.....
that would be cool.

Get your hands on that tech, I’d rob a 7/11 easy.......

Hey I remember reading that thread Skunk2!
This story certainly adds a new level to the old thread.
He may have witnessed a prototype version of the invisible tank.

A great way to make a tank disappear, and this applies to all current or previous tanks, is to use a Javelin missile system.

Works wonders! One shot and the tank is gone!

Wait, I'm being told that the tank must remain operational after the fact, nevermind then!

Pretty cool stuff, I can't wait to see a video of the thing in action!

Shattered OUT...

I also remember the thread about the invisible tank. To all of those who don't think this is anything special and don't see much use for it, you fail to realize the first to get a shot off wins in a tank battle (evenly matched tanks). Granted the infared signature is still there but who goes around looking for tank shaped infared signatures during the day? Most likely it will be the good ol' MK2 eyeballs looking for the enemy. I would much rather have this technology than not. About the time you may spot a puff of smoke from the barrel, you would be dead from the smoking hot Sabot round slamming into your vehicle.

Useful? Of course this is useful for the military. Thee who fires the first shot normally wins the battle. Tried and true. This would be great for many applications: recon, ambush, search and rescue, and assault.

And, yes, this technology has been around for a long time. Japan even created a jacket that uses the same technology.

one thing i hope for though is we don't sell/pass on these technologys to other nations like we always do (namely america).

Guess what??? We also have it. Look up the "Bird of Prey." It was a stealth aircraft that also tried this technology. It would mirror the sky above and display on the bottom. Has also ben tried on soldiers etc.. DARPA is quite advanced..
