Don't have an opinion concerning anything that may have happened to make the comet brighter, but I did get a pretty good look at it this morning. It certainly is a beautiful gem in the sky. Thanks for the thread, I wasn't even aware of the comet beforehand.

I missed it myself the first couple days due to weather, it finally cleared up, but now it's cold, I don't like cold. I'm bundling up again tonight to view it....

As far as wacky conspiracy theories go, I have to say that this is one of the most plausible I've seen lately.

It wouldn't surprise me that the various Defense Departments around the world are working either separately or together in secret to plan and test asteroid/comet defense systems. The reason for the secrecy is plausible, too. Citizen's groups are very opposed to putting nuclear weapons in orbit or into space, and I would imagine that nukes would have to be assessed as part of any comprehensive planetary defense plan.

Whether this particular event is evidence of that remains to be seen.

Deep Impact did not use an explosive device - it just used the kinetic energy of impact. The brightening achieved was fairly brief, and the impact had no significant impact on the comet's trajectory.

Sorry, but I think this is just half-baked fantasy. I can assure you NASA has no capability to "steer" a comet into a collision course with Earth, and wouldn't if they could.

A few things,
1)There would be a NWO if a comet of sufficient size impacted the earth.
NO WORLD ORDER, the devastaion would be complete; human civilization would not survive. Not even deep underground bases will survive the shock waves that will raise mountain ranges on the earth opposite the impact.
2) I do believe that we weren't told the complete truth about interception of comet Temple. I do believe it had a dual purpose, the public one was to study the make up of a comet. The secondary purpose, the one that was played down, was the interception and subsequent impacting of the comet. It was perfect testing of the concept of inteception of an comet/asteroid. It is something we will need to learn how to do.
3)Any mission to intercept the comet in question would have been launched months or even years ago for an interception this last week. Its a long ways away and even using an ion engine driven craft it would still take several months to get there given a suitable launch window was available. There would be so many people involved there is no way it could be kept secret.
And only one ats'er has gotten the significance of a bright new object appearing in the sky. Does anyone remember a past event of great importance that was hearlded by a bright new light in the sky? And does anyone remeber what event will be announced by the appearance of bright new light in the sky, in the then future?
It is also very interesting how so many different prophetic traditions from around the world are converging at this point in time.

(I know this doesnt belong here, but four F-16's just scrambled from the Guard base here. They were ON IT They have not left out of here like that in a very long time.)

I understand your position and I have to say much of the science is over my head, I was attempting to relate what the folks about the net are saying. The view of the omens, conspiracies and prophecies are pretty intriguing to me.

thanks doyder for the nasa info on the comet that i cant see yet due to our weather in new brunswick canada but the dates nasa gives for holmes comets perihilions are a significant time frame references for events that have occurred in the life of my wife and self and friends we used to have till they came into our lives and then sadly left us-it makes one wonder-every year from 1892 to 1993 and now this year 2007 ?scary stuff!

If its that thing I have been seeing on the east coast from SC mid morning hour 3 430 it is not just bright it looks look a supernova in freeze frame..I said when I saw it ,gee thats unusual cloud diffraction.. or a aplane with its bright lights on but stayed in one spot. I did not really think that much other than a passing thought that I hoped thats not an asteroid coming at us...I will look at it again tonight to see if its still there. Thanx for the post.

wow---- the size of that thing ! and jupiter ?: isnt that the biggest planet in our solar system ?----certaintly do not want to see us make "contact" just yet --thankyou !

The actual size of the comet isn't that big -- what you're seeing is just particles of debree/dust being lit by the sun. Still quite amazing though.

Hello all

First post on ATS although I have been lurking for a while!

Just wondering if this comet can been seen from the Southern Hemisphere?

In particular from New Zealand?

I havent actually gone out to see it yet (I live in Australia), but apperently if you look to the northern skies, very close to the horizon, between 1-3am -- you have a chance. Although because of the fact it's almost directly due north. you'd have to be looking from a very high point, or where there are no mountains, hills, trees etc. blocking the view.

If you try, bring binoculars -- they help a lot.

That is exactly right. It would take years to intercept this comet. It is farther away from us than Mars.

If you look at the comet's orbit, you would see it is in orbit around the Sun and between Mars and Jupiter, so it is no threat to us, so why blow it up? That would be some expense for nothing more than a light show.

As Navieko said it would be difficult to see from your location. I used StarryNight to set the location to NZ and the comet will be located due North right on the horizon and at it's highest point about 3:00 AM near the Perseus Constellation.

External Image

Even if you could get up high enough to see it, you will be seeing it through 10 times the atmosphere as if it were straight up, so it will be tough.

Sorry mate, your better off looking at photos.

can anyone see it out there tonight? last night it was extremely bright yellow/orange and quite distinct even with the moon out, but tonight there's nothing to be found.

Thanks for the quick reply guys.

Disappointing that I have little chance of seeing the comet.

Might give it a try in the weekend anyway. Its pretty flat to the north of where I live so who knows might get lucky.

Oh well will have to keep track of this thread instead.
