I had a modestly spooky encounter with a cloud about a year ago, at night, when I was out for my usual walk in a suburban D.C. neighborhood. By all appearances it was a small cloud, perhaps 200-500 meters wide, but it was completely isolated from the other clouds I could see and it was really moving fast to the southeast (roughly toward Andrews AFB) and was staying together in a very coherent way, while the other clouds nearby off to the south were disorganized and not moving in that direction, if any. As it passed over it dropped a little rain on me and I felt a weak gust of wind. I watched it until it disappeared over the horizon, which it did rather quickly.

It may have been just a cloud, but I've never seen one like it before or since. I didn't feel any fear, but I was rather impressed.

my friend and i saw a few clouds like this during the day. every cloud was going east while a few very strange looking ones were going west very fast. like you said they stayed tightly packed together while the others changed almost constantly

Sounds interesting! Though I'm sure someone will have a "scientific" explanation for it, they always do! =/

But I don't believe science has anything to do with these "clouds", it's something else!

my friend who is very skeptical, thought it was weird and that it didn't add up. he has also seen the ufo trails that i made a thread about. not to go off topic but yesterday we were playing basket ball and we saw the ufo trail and followed it with our eyes and saw a "plane" and it almost hit one of the jets that are always following them

I saw this thread a few days ago when I logged onto this forum but hesitated about commenting in it because I've already talked enough about some of the out of the ordinary things that are seen off my hi-rise balcony that overlooks Lake Erie. Nevertheless -- I changed my mind on that so here goes...

Just a couple of weeks ago, I was talking to one of my neighbors about some of those darting white lights that are seen over the lake every once in awhile where automatically, she instead started talking about seeing some mysterious dark 'masses' that she's seen low over the lake -- not just one but a few of them and not just once, but several times. Well, she lives in an adjacent building from mine that's part of the same complex that's facing east as opposed to west. Anyway, I'm only bringing this up because I too saw a large.... and I mean a LARGE, amorphous shaped black mass that was traveling west at a constant moderate speed from over my building toward the city of Cleve. It was the weirdest thing. Sure, it sort of looked like a cloud yet it was more dense and opaque than that. It's hard to explain what it actually looked like but it did not look even remotely like smoke or anything like that.
Nevertheless, IT DID LOOK OMINOUS. I don't know why it gave me this impression but as I was watching it traveling from over my building and across the sky, it sent chills up my spine where I sensed that whatever it was, it was not good and perhaps even a sign for impending doom.

Hey, interesting experience. I work in the weather industry (Australian Bureau Of Meteorolgogy) and I will dig a bit into our archives to see if we have anything on clouds like the one you describe.

Ive never seen one and in my opinion it was probably an astronomical event rather than a meteorological event. But will still have a look for you anyway

Oz... that would be great if you could find anything about this phenomenon. The thing that really stuck with me was that that it was not just floating like a cloud but was actually TRAVELING across the sky. So this is what was so strange about it .. and that it was HUGE.

Wow, then that probably rules out astronomical phenomena if it was visbly travelling. Do you have any idea how high up it was? Same to the op, if you have any idea about the altitude

Well, I live on top of a 22 story high rise and it was traveling right over the building. I was sitting on my balcony late that evening star-gazing and watching the fishing boats out on the bay.

So just saying that it was low.. lower than the .. what? 2,000 ft. min. for small aircraft. This is another thing that was so strange about it. My neighbor in the other building spoke of black masses that were lower over the lake that were stationary. The one I saw was much larger and traveling... not floating but 'moving' at a steady moderate rate.. slower than a small aircraft.

Hmmm, very strange. Could still be a cloud I guess but I would have to see it first hand. Do you think you could get a pic of it next time? Thats if you see it often enough of course

that's how the clouds my friend and i saw but since it was around 2:30 pm they were white. but they looked "too real" to be clouds and they never changed at all. for the most part they looked almost exactly the same and they were smaller and lower than other clouds that day

This happened in the summer of 06 and I have not seen anything like it since.
And I'm glad about that because it really did give me creeps when I saw it.. it was so odd because it had a strange amorphous shape to it ... not defined at all. More like the shape of a cloud only more dense and MOVING WEST. Very WEIRD. And, it was BLACK... NOT grey but BLACK.

That's interesting. So this would mean that they are white too. Could be in the day that are white and at night they are black.

maybe, there were at least one hundred of them flying over for about an hour. i couldn't find my camera though, in my thread www.abovetopsecret.com... stated that i just found it about 15 min. ago. if i see them again i will deffinately get a picture

Actually, at night thick clouds usually have an orange tinge to them due to light sources on the ground. I would be very surprised if they appeared black at night if they were low. The only clouds that would appear black during the night are the high level clouds (depending on the city) as the light doesnt get up that high to 30,000ft

Well, it sounds like you definitely saw someting unusual that day, that's for sure!
I would keep your cam on hand in case you see the same thing up there again sometime. A movie cam would be even better. The photo's I'm seeing in that thread look more like vapor trails yet from your description of what you actually saw that day, you are describing a phenomenon that's similar to what's being talked about in this thread.

Anyway, this may be something that's worth investigating more on. Good Luck and hope you see it again sometime!

Black as coal would be a good description of the color of that travelling cloud thing. But, lol, I do think it's something one would have to see for themselves to understand what it was that I saw that evening.
I've never talked about it here before because how does one even begin to describe it? If you say it looks like a cloud then that's what it was right? But this is not what it was... it was wierd.

So, I guess you forgot to take a picture of it? I'm sorry, but your words are just words. No credibility what so ever. I can make the same stance that a 10000ft elephant shaped flying saucer excreting gold colored manure hovered on top of my house and my story would be as credible as yours.

Thank you.
