Shortly before he died, one of Israel's most prominent rabbis wrote the name of the Messiah on a small note which he requested would remain sealed until now. When the note was opened, it revealed what many have known for centuries: Yehoshua, or Yeshua (Jesus), is the Messiah.

meh.

So a Rabbi hid a note that said Yeshua is the name of the Messiah?
Someone should have told the guy this really wasn't worth the drama created.

Okie dokie, thanks for the opinion.

Yeah, Madness, I am real sure that a RABBI is going to say that some Joe Shmole person off the street by the name of Jesus is the Messiah... Makes perfect sense.
Really, Madness, you are arguing from a steep cliff on this one.

condescension doesn't suit you...

ok, which makes more sense. a rabbi believing the messiah being someone named jesus in the future or a rabbi believing that the christian jesus is the messiah... yet doing nothing about it in his lifetime?

i'm not arguing off a steep cliff here, you just have a massive assumption that you can't support

I think it was explicitly implied in the story that is linked in the op that the messiah the Rabbi named in his letter is the same messiah of the new testament.

the story implies it... but does the letter

wait, how do you explicitly imply?
implying is implicit...

anyway. the story may make the connection, but does the letter do it?

Jesus derives from the Latin name Iesous.

As far as "Emmanuel". that's a title or position, not a name.

Isaiah.7:14.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew.1:23.

Behold,a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,and they shall call his name Immanuel, which being interpreted is,God is with us.

Doesn't sound like its a title or a position to me.

I believe it's already been clearly written/stated that the name of the Messiah is "Immanuel," (Isaiah 7:14, 8:8) which pretty much put Yeshua/Jesus out of the running.

Curiously, at this point in time, the Jewish people don't need a Messiah. So I guess it's all moot.

Why would a Jew believe Jesus was their Messiah when he obviously didn't fulfill all of the Hebrew criteria? Which,as their law states, the Messiah must do.

For a Jewish point of view of their Messiah you will find the link below useful.

LOL...I stand corrected and thank you for the grammar lesson. My wife constantly has to correct me and I sincerely do appreciate your doing so.

My point being is that the letter if we take the article at face value contained a reference to Jesus in Hebrew.

His son denied it was his handwriting, so I do not think the contents of the letter are in dispute as far as I can tell from the article. The authenticity of who wrote it is the only thing that seems to be question.

An alternate explaination is that the Rabbi met a person named Yishua and that the rabbi thought that this person was the messiah. Yishua is a somewhat common name in Israel, just as Jesus is a common name in Latin America.

Emmanuel means "God with us"

As far as the Rabbi's description it doesn't sound like the Christian Biblical prophesy of the messiah (Jesus') return.

I'd be cautious here.

It's amazing to me how everyone is trying to skirt around this issue... "Well, maybe he meant this, or maybe he meant that..." No, he meant exactly what he wrote. He wasn't referring to some futuristic "Messiah" that is to come... He is referring to one that has already come and went...

really? where does it say that in his writing?

and even if it was a person that came and went... how many men went by the name yeshu?

you're still assuming so damn much and yet you're claiming it's obvious

Yes? And what strange twist of fate gave the United States two presidents named George Bush?

Isn't life grand? that it hands us these weird things just to keep us interested?

This is actually how I see the end period going on.

The Messiah, if it is Jesus, will win over most Jews. And likewise, if the Messiah wasn't Jesus but had a divine explanation FOR Jesus, the Christians would begin the break ranks and follow.

As to the Muslims .. I couldn't tell you.

You really need to learn more. Immanuel means, God Among Us, it's not the name of the messiah, it's a description, it's the combination of two jewish words...Nice try though, but it fell miserably short. Jesus is the Lord.
Thank you.
