I just read a members posting relating to the meaning of life. I thought it would be interesting to hear members personal thoughts on the meaning of life.
I think we'll get some interesting answers here in ATS

Personally, I think the meaning of life somehow relates to how everything in life is bad and good. Nothing is perfect in life, theres always a negative to every positive. Some how I feel it relates to this.....not really sure how but maybe the meaning is to somehow balence the positives and the negatives.

But would like to hear your opinions, and your opinion on mine thanks

IMO, there is no meaning to life. That is the meaning. When you finally understand that all your questions about why you are here is that there is no rhyme or reason for it, you have finally understood what life is about. Its a bad answer, but it is at least an answer.

When discovering the meaning of anything, one must first realize that he/she has to remove all opinions of what a thing is in order to discover its true nature. By this I mean to say that the Truth of a thing must not be both true and untrue at the same time. This seems simple enough. It is our perceptions of things as being true to our view point that misleads our judgements on said things.

I will be dramatic in my example and say that one person could say that Hitler was an evil man because he had so many murdered for his ideas, but yet another could say that he was a great man because he brought his country/government together into a powerful force. So is Hitler evil or a great man? Neither because, while looking at his existence from different view points and with different perogatives, the Truth of a thing can not be both itself and a contradictory. This is difficult for most to admit because most people are ruled by their emotions and refuse to believe that their perceptions are individual to them.

So when we strip away everything that we think about the meaning of life or our personal feelings about it, what do we get. One is born to live, one lives to live and then one lives to die. It is the order of all things without personal view points. The meaning of life is to live until you die. It is just that simple.

Now people always want to feel that they are more important then to have to subject themselves to this sterile logic, but I believe that this is the only way that one can discover the Absolute Truth of a thing as seen without tainted perception. Still, as I have stated, we all want to feel special. Whether it is that we are good people or that our lives work and achievements are our purpose or that our morality will save us.

So again the meaning of life is to live. What you fill that time with is your prerogative and not lives purpose.

The meaning of life is to be born, reproduce and die. Then they reproduce, then die. Then...e.t.c....

The problem with this thread is that no one has stated the answer so as to help people answer the meaning. Remember, the answer is 42. Now talk amongst yourselves.

The meaning of life from my view is one big journey to knowing and loving
God and his son Jesus from birth until death. Its about good versus evil and what we will choose. Loving God
and others and choosing good is a choice of free will and when we reach the age of reason we have this choice.

From there God gives us clues on his greatness, the animals and their never ending joy, nature and its beauty, space and the planets, the way
our bodies workm, miracles, Jesus sent to earth are all clues so tha we may know who God is and that whats in us, our joy, and love, and whats in animals
is multiplied in God by more than we can imagine.

he loves everybody mor than we can imagine, and all the days of our life we hear that voice in our head telling us right from wrong, and what
the true maning of life is, if we just take time to be alone and meditate on him for aminute everybody would have great consciences.

This is what i think its all about.

peace.

Who said that the Truth is for our benefit? Humans warp things so that they have meanings which benefit us, but this is not Truth. The Truth is beyond us and is whether we exist or not.

And how did that cave man ever figure out that the Truth is 42 anyway (it has been a while since I have seen HGG).

Cave man? They found out when they talked to Slartibartfast on the most unlikely planet in the universe, who played the video for them on why earth was created!

I think the meaning of life is the pursuit of knowledge. It's the only thing that you can take with you when you leave this earth

My bad I recalled something about a cave man pulling numbers out of a bag at the end of the film. It's been a while.

I believe that it's a combination between Amuk and Nada. Life like everything in the universe is a cycle, please no Elton John here, AND it is also a journey. Raising your kids is not enough. I want to see how my children raise their children. If they do that well then I will have done my job.

You forgot about saying please no Arrowsmith, too!

The meaning of life in my opinion is to be born, live life like you only have one (there may be re-incarnation, but if there isnt i'm living this life as much as i can), learn some stuff, generally be a good person, pop some buns in the oven, and bugger off and die.... thats just about it... maybe more maybe less... as long as your having fun who cares

Woo, good point. Hadn't thought about that. I think the only thing that could make her look better is if she had pointy ears. Wish I could see that. Oh, wait, I have, and she did

The meaning of life is obvious. I saw it in a movie and I'll give you the quote.

"M-hmm. Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations. And, finally, here are some completely gratuitous pictures of penises to annoy the censors and to hopefully spark some sort of controversy, which, it seems, is the only way, these days, to get the jaded, video-sated public off their #ing arses and back in the sodding cinema. Family entertainment? Bollocks. What they want is filth: people doing things to each other with chainsaws during tupperware parties, babysitters being stabbed with knitting needles by gay presidential candidates, vigilante groups strangling chickens, armed bands of theatre critics exterminating mutant goats. Where's the fun in pictures? Oh, well, there we are. Here's the theme music. Goodnight. "

Isn't it ironic? The movie is called "The Meaning of Life."
