'Superbug' Found At Schools Across U.S.

www.cnn.com

Students at a high school in Virginia prepared Thursday for the funeral of a popular classmate, the victim of a deadly drug-resistant strain of bacteria that has turned up in schools across the country recently.

It's called MRSA, short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and is responsible for more deaths in the United States each year than AIDS, according to new data.

I have been thinking.

Did any other state besides NY make the 6 graders get a DPT shot?I think iut was DPT..

Anyway for the first time since i remember they were saying kids have to come get this shot or they won't be allowed in school, they were doing it for $15 a shot but those who could not afford it got it free.....

Now we here this superbug is even more active than aids!?!?!?

Something don't add up,6 counties around me have people sick with this superbug......It's getting pretty worrysome.

my mum caught mrsa when she was in hospital. its a pretty nasty disease. nhs being what it is nowadays though - a lot of people get sicker when they go there than they were before. guess it's due to not cleaning the wards & instruments properly or the personal hygiene of the staff - well that and doctors prescribing antibiotics for everything so your body loses it's ability to fight infections

tea tree oil is looking very promising as a cure to mrsa though (what doesnt that stuff cure?) so if i were you i would stock up on it if you think you might need it. then again, it is such a wonderful cure-all that you should stock up on it regardless!

MRSA has far too much hype built up around it.. i work as a carer, as such, i've worked with people who have MRSA. It's only dangerous if you get it in an open wound, in which case, it'll stop it from healing and perhaps spread through your body... Young people shouldn't really be concerned about it, providing you keep any open wounds protected. Even if a young person got it, you'd probably fight it off.. It's not common for it to be a killer :-)

So let me get this right you are saying it is not a common killer yet killed more individuals then AIds in 2005??? Sorry but that does not compute, when you consider the fact 19,000 deaths are estimated to occur annually.

19,000 sounds like an enourmous number until you put it into perspective, it averages out to about 3 deaths per hospital in the US per year.

What's concerning about MRSA and other 'superbugs' i sthat it highlights the fac that we are running out of anti-biotic bullets to kil infections.

Anti-biotics are everyuwhere in our foodchain...from being fed to battery chickens, to beef cattle, to being prescribed as a 'just in case' measure by doctors.

Thare have been no significant anti-biotic medications released into the general pharma-market since the advent of Vancomycin which is the drug of last-resort and the only available compound capable of beating MRSA

Exactly.. considering that it's spreading like wildfire, it isn't much if you think about it. And it's all caused by idiots not washing their hands! It's as simple as that.. thoroughly wash your hands wherever necessary, and you should be fine :-)

One case near me in Las Cruces NM. The janitors did some extra cleaning and everything is normal. This infection is passed around in locker rooms alot an sometimes a whole team will have it.
I think that hand sanitizers just kill the strains that keep the super strains in check. Kind of a catch 22.
There is a rhinovirus that will live in sterilizing solution. That is one tough bug.

This is a serious problem in the UK and has been for a while.
The plan to combat it at the moment is to super clean all the hospitals, and review hygiene procedures.
Its bad for old folks who are already run down from other illnesses.
It has killed many here over the last few years.
The scary thing about it is that people only seem to contract the disease in hospitals.
Its horrid, hope it gets dealt with very soon.

I have also heard that but do not think it is completely fair to state that without mentioning why it is so bad. As I understand many in the UK are refushing to wash their hands in hospitals because of types and soaps and religous reasons.

this might be related, but probably isn't...

one of my co workers's son goes to one of the schools that were closed in Bedford.

I am wondering if it's something about this area, maybe a contaminate or something of that sort, but, I have ran into more people down here who have cancer or have had cancer than I ever did in NY.

Like I said, it probably isn't related, but it would be interesting to find out the cancer rates of these areas that are having these outbreaks and if they have abnormally high cancer rates.

Thats interesting Shots,I had not heard about people refusing to use the soaps-but It made me think of an experiment my bro did at university.

They cleaned petri dishes with regular soap and some with "anti bacterial" soap.
The regular soap kept the bacteria away better so long it was washed daily, but the bacteria on the dishes cleaned with "anti bacterial" came back after a while, even with regular cleaning,as they had developed a tolerance for the soap.
Not sure if something similar could be happening in the hospitals, but maybe I suppose.

Only in their case many refused to used any soap and flat refused to wash therir hands. We have to be fair here petri dishes and refusing to wash ones hands are not exactly the same. Any fool knows staph infections will continue to spread when people do not wash.

Agreed-thats just stupid..Do you know any more about what reasons they gave not to wash?

There is talk of returning to the days when doctors and nurses come to work in their own clothes, and change into uniform at the hospital.
That may help things a little as well maybe.

Sorry that is all I am know since I read it in the media. Had it not been for one or two articles more then likely I would not even have known that.

While I know it may happen I highly doubt that working nurses and doctors would make it standard practice not to wash in fact one would think hospitals make it manditory procedue and suspect failure to follow the rules would be grounds for immediate firing.

Just found yet another story indicating this is spreading to even more schools in Washington DC and has affect4d their Fire Department EMS as well

www.wtop.com...

If it continues at this rate they are going to have to decontaminate the whole country.

What you've got here is a bit of clever writing to boost up the fear.

I (me, personally) have killed just as many people in the last year as AIDS has in the last 30. Globally.

That is to say, none at all.
AIDS doesn't kill you. It trashes your immune system so badly that it's just a matter of time before you catch something that does kill you.

You gotta watch it with these guys.
They're fricken tricky.
