Addicts get "Rewards" for clean samples

news.bbc.co.uk

Heroin and coc aine addicts on the government's treatment programme are being given drugs as a reward for clean urine samples, the BBC has learned.

The National Treatment Agency (NTA), which runs the £500m a year scheme, admits the practice is "unethical".
A third of clinics in the survey said users who produced a drug-free urine sample may be offered increased doses of heroin substitute as a reward
A quarter admit that clients can choose the type of substitute drugs they want.

Another example of the nanny state taking away personal responsibility.

What a great way to reward an addict who has stayed clean - MORE DRUGS!

This really beggars belief - what are these people thinking?
Perhaps another example of targets being more important than treatment.

Gotta' love the goof ol' UK. This just does not seem right, the "junkie" gives you a clean sample showing he/she has NOT indulged in any drugs and could possibly be getting closer to recovery, and what do you do? Give them something that could possibly reverse what has been done? "Drugs" as a reward, what is this world comming to.....

I wholeheartedly support studies into alternatives to the way most countries handle drug addiction today. What's being done now clearly does not work.
