I have suffered from SEVERE bouts of insomnia for going on 15 years now. I have times when I cannot sleep for days at a time, no matter what sleeping pill I take or how hard I try.

It seems like anytime I get still, and on the verge of sleep, I can't do ANYTHING but think. My mind starts racing so fast that I couldn't sleep no matter what.

I have noticed that a great deal of you seem to haunt ATS in the wee hours of the morning (night) like I do and I was wondering; Do you guys suffer the same problems I do?

Could it possibly have something to do with the way our minds work that causes this problem? Or am I just unlucky?

Who knows, maybe I'm on the verge of my own Tyler Durden.

A few things are spoken of insomnia. A. it's the signpost of being bi-polar, those w/ the condition, like you, go days on end without sleep. A lot of research points to people not "getting" bi-polar until their 30s. B. I've read w/ the 2012 stuff, we're going to get sick more, have sleepless nights as we enter this portion of the galaxy. Two ideas, I go back and forth on both personally -- but I am also in a weird day to day schedule.... take 2 melatonin, they're a good natural sleep sedative -- they usually work for me personally w/ some sedative tea.

Find a way to slow your brain down. I used to go through that many years ago. Move to CA and get some medical mary jane...
Try some meditation. Next time you cant sleep, picture a single natural object in a plain natural setting, like a tree in a field at a distance and concentrate on it. Force yourself to, and ignore everything that jumps in the scene, no matter how interesting. It'll be back. Next thing you know you'll wake up wondering what happened.
Worked for me... still does, like in a few minutes...

i will talk to you about this all day.
i have back problems so that effects my sleep but i have always battled inomnia...i can go a week and be ok..get decent hours and the next week i am all out of whack..
i try to explain this to people and they don't understand when i sai i just can't turn my brain off.
that is what keeps me awake.....i just can't stop thinking about things...

i think about EVERYTHING...music, what news is going on, my new tattoo, this and that.....the machinery hardly ever shuts down...
constantly, constantly thinking....

same with the sleep aides.
i have tons of scripts and when i have these bouts, they don't work.
i feel tired, sure but i can't actually get some shut eye.

That's me. My mind won't stop. I usually get about five hours of restless sleep a night.

I used to take some naughty things that made it hard to sleep, then i'd take a puff of a naughty thing to calm me down and that used to work, but then i got paranoid, and stopped puffing the naughty stuff, which made it extremely hard to fall asleep. So i got into hypnosis and would listen to hypnosis that would take me down into such a relaxed state of mind that i could not feel my body and eventually drifted off to sleep. But then i got addicted to hypnosis and could not get to sleep without it, just like with the naughy stuff, but eventually i became ok. However now i take anti-depressants, and a pill called temaze that helps to sleep and stops the hands shaking. But also there is an over the counter non prescription medicine for heyfever (anti-histamine) called phenergan that contains something that can help with sleep. Then there is also night time strength mercindol (contains 500mg paracetal 9.6mg codeine phosphate and 5mg of doxylamine succinate which is a analgesic/calmative/muscle relaxant).

Now for the last few nights i've been having two mercindol as directed, a temaze and a phenergan (pssst, you cant have anti-histamine every night long term as its bad for your body, body needs to have a break every now and then). im out in 20 mins. I think the mercindol does the most more than the others.

anyways. just what i find that works very well.

goodluck. I also know someone who only gets 5 hours of sleep a night no matter what sleeping tablets he has. a valium will let him sleep an hour extra, thats it. Goodluck.

I've tried Xanax and Val, both of which are for anxiety NOT sleeping/sedative. I guess you can get a 'script for Ambien but who knows the side efx.

Which is why I mentioned herbal stuff earlier. At least try it, I know people are like, "That won't work for me" -- I thought the same and have had days on end without sleep where they have not worked but eventually I did get some sleep and post-that time period, I started taking a couple of Melatonin and they've been working great since. Also, there's something called "Sound Sleep" w/ a lot of herbs in it, can get at Whole Foods or a place like that, it's got Hops in it, so you could avoid the bottle -- whereas, that's always another choice.

i had ambien before-=nothing
lunesta=nothing

i started to take over the counter sleep aides but i was taking a lot of them and damn, the cost added up.
now i take my prescription meds and my recreation and try to relax myself as much as possible.

i still don't sleep much and when i do, i don't sleep well.

Went three weeks with out sleep. Finally my boss told me go to the doctor or loose your job. I love my job so I went.

They sent me for a sleep test. I was hooked up to every monitor known to man. I did fall a sleep for a few seconds at a time. In those few seconds to a minute at a time I quite breathing 30 times that night. A couple days latter they had me come back for another test this time using a whats called a C pap machine. It helped me to go to sleep for up to 10 minutes at a time. I got a total of 1 hour sleep that night. wich was twice as much as I had gotten before. I got my own home c pap machine now and it helps a lot.

I am like every body else on this thread my brain just doesn't shut down. I was told by my sleep specialist that that is pretty normal for people who have suffered sleep acnia for years.

So I use ambian to get to sleep and the C pap machine helps me to stay that way. Pill or no pill if you quite breathing while your sleeping you will wake up. most of us insomniacs have sleep acnia but we don't relise it. We don't feel it happening just like we don't feel ourselves falling asleep for a few seconds at a time.

Open up the yellow pages find your self a sleep center and get some help. lack of sleep will kill you. it ages your brain and is a leading cause of dementia and alzheimer's.

I too have suffered from insomnia...actually as far back into my childhood as i can remember.
I've tried to research the history of insomnia but haven't been able to find much. For some reason I think there is more too it than it would at first seem. I definitly agree that 2012 plays a huge contribution.
I know that at night my energy is much clearer than in the day. Anyone else feel the same?

i agree that my energy is clearer at night, which is why i want to stay up doing stuff and thinking about stuff.... unfortunatly, i have to work early 5 days a week.

i suggest medical mary jane if you can get your hands on it... thats what i use to get me sleepy if my mind is racing.

the only time that doesnt work is when i have serious problems that im thinking about, in which case you just need to think it out yourself, no drug will make you stop thinking about it.
