I've had this happen to me around three times in recent years. One where I was on the other side of the street, I approached, walked past and it went off untill I got a bit further on, then it pinged back on.

The more recent occurrences, two, have happened within three months. The first was around three months ago in a course. I was sat in a room concentrating hard looking at the person opposite me, and a light directly above me turned off. Everyone looked at me and I felt really embarrassed. The lad next to me said "OHHH Spooky!"

The most recent one was last week. I was walking around from my street and approached a lamp post to walk past it. As I did the energy was drained from it and it began to flicker and get dimmer. As I left the surrounding area, it came back on fine. I kept watching it as I was walking down the street to see if it was faulty, but it stayed on perfectly.

It's all very weird, but I wouldn't worry about it, although granted when it happens it can make people look at you funny and you feel a little bit on edge, like you're a walking demon or something lol. Just because other people look at you like "WTF?!"

That happens all the time around where I live. I've always just assumed it had something to do with motion sensing - if nobody's around the light or somebody passes by, it'll turn off. Sort of a ploy for the cheap municipality to save on hydro
. Never really thought much of it as it happens so often. Maybe I'll give the town office a call and see whats the deal with the lights?

A lot of lights (especially here in the States) run on photoelectric cells (as others have mentioned) and thus turn on and off without anyone having to control them based on the time of day. When I lived in rural Kansas growing up we had one of those yard lights (one of those great big fluorescent/hydrogen? lights way up on a pole) that almost everyone has outside of town. It turned on when it got dark and turned back off when it got light. Maybe these things malfunction? Overheating and the like as others have said.

Or since they work based on light it could have been that your headlights shining at it just the right way (maybe using reflections) made it think it was daylight and click off just as you passed.

I have always wondered why lights will click on and off by themselves. I only recently learned of these photoelectric cells--I always just thought that they worked on timers or something. It has startled me a few times when they just shut off for no reason when I'm nearby. When I was really little I also used to believe that street lights made me sneeze because when we drove out of town at night I would sneeze repeatedly as we passed the orange streetlights. But I digress...

I agree with Monger; I think that they might cycle them on and off to save electricity (aka cost) to those paying for them to stay on. They turn on and off too often at night just to be malfunctioning...or maybe they're just never repaired.

I have concentrated and visualized traffic lights changing green and staying green while driving through the intersection and have been pretty successful so far at getting what I want so long as I'm not already stopped. I should probably actually measure my success rate though

It happens to me sometimes too while driving or walking. I don't have an explanation, but it is freaky.

I too am a SLIder, I guess.
There is a bank of lights, that no matter what time of night I go past them, they can be counted on to turn off.
I showed my mom one night, bringing her to my house a visitoo many tuimes to be a cooincidence.
It has gotten to where if the light DOESN'T tunr off, (especially this one lt.
And it is not my head lights, I need to replace them, they are so dim.
And motion detectors will turn ON at motion.
I am not going to hang around a street light in the middle of the night to see how many times these, (there are more than one of them) lights go off..
But I have been driving behind another car, about a 1/4 mile, (this is a straight run and you can see until the next hill crest.), and the lamps don't go off when THAT car passes, but sure shooting, it does when I pass.
This has happened too many times to be a coincidence. It has gotten to where if Old Faithful, (the one that does it most) DOESN'T turn off, I am surprised.
