I never had heard of eating utensils (ie, knives forks, ...) being turned into "pistols" for your dinner time "security" until I came across this website.

Combat Cutlery Gallery

A new set of deadly eating-irons added for your pleasure and delectation.

The knife, fork and spoon shown in the picture all have built-in flintlock pistols.
Note that the barrels point backwards, towards the user

The knife and fork here demonstrate escalation in table-top firepower. Knife and fork are both double-barrelled, each with one trigger and priming pan so that both barrels fire together.
Viewed from above, looking into the pan, frizzen on the right.

This time the barrels are at least pointing away from the user, so he is well-placed to riddle his dining partner with four shots. The actual knife and fork sections fold backwards.
Nothing known about date or place of manufacture, or mental state of the maker.

These were made around the 1700's.

I guess you really didn't want to interupt somebody while they were eating back then!

what shoots out of that? bullets? or do the blades shoot out of them?

I bet you those things would go for a fortune on antiques roadshow!

Looking at the pitures from the top to the bottom:

1st Set Of Pictures
Spoon woul fire towards your left
the fork to your right
and the knife to your left

2nd Set of Pictures
Both shoot towards your right

The gun would fire a lead ball back then.

It takes a lot to leave me speechless, but all I can say is

"..."

Having not said that, this does bring a whole new meaning to the old phrase "shooting your mouth off". I can't help but wonder how effective they would be...certainly not very accurate, and the working pressure would be very, very low, so probably not very powerful, either...but very amusing!

Probably for royalty when they are eating.

In the event someone barges in for perhaps a hostage or assassination attempt, BAM!

But man the double barreled ones seriously thats not very discreet I mean it going off by accident while your eating food everywhere!

Many common utencils were made into firearms, canes, books, flask's. Not so much for defense, they were used as a "Status Symbol" when firearm's were rare and only the rich could afford them. Clock maker's were on the forefront of arm's development, they were used to making and using small metal parts.
