alien spacecrafts and ufos fly in and out everyday- if we can't recieve signals from ships entering our own planet and atmosphere, how the hell are we gonna hear other aliens deep in space?

Clearly they use light to transfer signals- alot of ships have a bunch of strobing lights and stuff like that...

Definitely a cover-up or waste of our money like always with the government...

before we go looking deep in space for extraterrestrial life- how bout we just look up in our own skies?

They ignore the ships coming in and out yet claim they want to make contact with aliens...Thats like saying you want to be social but your gonna go ahead and stay inside your house all day and ignore people trying to come in.

Back to the topic... well, kinda...

I wrote a short story years back that revolved around radio transmission leakage and the "big wow" event. The big wow was a massive spike recorded by SETI that was so large that someone scribbled "wow" on the margin of the readout graph.

My story hypothesized that this event was an alien civilization telling us to "SHUT UP!!", because there are "thing" out there that listen for interstellar noise, then come and eat you. They were doing us a favor sending us a tightly focused burst transmission that would be hard for the "things" (I called 'em "Skree) to pick up. If we got it, good, if not... well too bad for us.
Of course in my story the transmission was finally fully decoded just before the Skree showed up. Far too late to do anything about it and humanity met it's end to be footnoted in an alien archeology project.

Thing is, this could be an actual danger. If there are hostile interstellar species out there, their version of SETI is likely much more advanced than ours... and this is how they would do their hunting. It's a near perfect way to find underdeveloped worlds that wouldn't present much of a challenge, yet would likely be resource rich.

I'm not suggesting that this is something to actually worry about.
It's just something interesting to mull around.

Man, I keep seeing an awful lot of posts about Opiate Narcotics around here.

Sure we can get into the debate of whether said individual who makes post has a legal prescription or not, but in -any case- not just this one, theres a very real chance that it could be illegal drugs, not prescribed, in which case it would be breaking the Terms of Service pretty good, considering a thread of mine gets TOS'd because I mention medical mary jane.

I'm not trying to be a whiney arse and say "get him too" or anything like this, I'm just asking people to keep this stuff to themself. Last week someone was posting about taking Percocet medication for dental work in the Faith and Spirituality forum in a thread that had nothing to do with that. And it slipped by too.

All posts about Opiate Narcotics slip through? Why?

any body with any sense out there wouldn't want us listening in on their communications for the same reason our governments encrypt their messages-----------we wouldn't want a potential enemy to gain an advantage over us-------what i see when i look around my own neighbourhood is potential trouble from a few that dont control their kids and some drunks that dont control themselves. i have no plans to invite them over so they can assume they have the right to control me or get in my face.

One probability is that the many other sentient species that are able to use radio transmissions are monitoring just as we are, but it's passive. They'd have to be a type II civilization to broadcast their presence.

It's kind of ironic. Millions of sentient species all watching the skies for transmissions, but nobody able to afford the cost of a gigawatt transmitter to broadcast such signals.

Not sure if i am totally correct here but we already are broadcasting our exsistence.. the very first radio waves are still travelling outwards in all directions at the speed of sound ... isnt this the case?

Actually, our signals have been traveling the galaxy at the speed of LIGHT since about the mid 30's I believe. So. They've gone apprx 70 lightyears deep, so far.
Now for those who wonder why didn't we think of this in the beginning.
The answer is a cultural one.
At that time and for years after, we thought that we were the center of the universe, much like we 'thought' the sun revolved around us.
We 'thought' that we were the only lifeforms in the universe.
That has now been disproven with the discovery of microbes, and possibly plant life (lichens etc) on mars.

As far as the 'intelligent' life out there viewing us as some sort of intergalactic hors d’oeuvres, I seriously doubt there is anything more than personal belief to substantiate that idea.
And, we're so full of perservatives, and mcdonalds deep fat etc. I would doubt a more evolved lifeform would want to eat us....

I'm your personal news source now?
Look it up.

Here're are a couple of freebies for you.
Search mars+methane
Here's another: search fortisimo
And for info on past existant life search "sir charles shultz+fossils".

Beyond that, do your own research.
Then post back what you find.

Skies t o be swept for signs of alien life?

Cool, if we do find some aliens out there.

I'm just hoping we will know of their existence by 2012

too bad them first radio waves were the rants of hitler...

also, does anyone seriously think if contact was made that it would be announced?
wasn't there a video from a seti conference about a solid extra-terrestrial signal that was hushed?

(can't find the bookmark. will look more and post if i can find it)

So you say whatever you want and you are too lazy to back it up? What kind of pretentious bastard are you?

Ah, I see. Too lazy to do your own research.

I am the 'pretentious bastard' who is saying that you are a LAZY pretentious bastard.
What. You all of a sudden can't type into a search engine?
Please.
Convince yourself, if you're truly interested, which I suspect not. It's just too dammmed easy to slam, not so easy to do actual research.
If you want to hurl insults. Please do. You won't last long, what with the T&C and all. D.A.
Keep sucking on the official DOD/NASA teat.
Show some of your research skills, instead of your ignorance.
Both of you.

Uh huh. Well, please put me in my place by citing a source that states microbes have been found on mars.

Please do your own research. Your keyboard obviously works. Partially.

Uh... Alex, that's not how rational debate works.
If you want to present an argument or to back up a statement you have made, the onus is on you to provide the information. You need to present your case if you want it to be taken seriously. Telling someone to go do their own research is just silly.

God is an ultra complex equashion that is best expressed in terms of a pattern in a unending spectrum of light.
Go research quantum mechanics, fractal mathematics, and color theory.

As to the issue at hand, I have done quite a bit of research into microbes on Mars and have found lots of theories supporting that there could be basic life on Mars, but not one single report that it has been found or confirmed.

If you have a link to share that states otherwise, I would be most interested in seeing it.
