Editor convicted of insulting Turkey's identity

Arat Dink, editor of the Armenian newspaper Agos, and publisher Serkis Seropyan each received a one-year suspended sentence for “insulting Turkishness,” said their lawyer, Erdal Dogan. He said they would appeal the sentences.
“The discriminatory mentality which turned intolerance into a state tradition has yet again declared criticism and expression of opinion an insult to Turkishness and a crime,” the group Human Rights Associated said in a statement.

Hmm, and here was me thinking I had a right to this thing . . . what was it called . . . FREE SPEECH!
If I want to write an article that insults another country, or even another public citizen like, say, President Bush, I beleive I should be able to do that without fear of being sent to jail.

What are we coming to.

For those of us whose rights are protected daily by the diligent efforts of our fellow citizens, they can be easily taken for granted.

The truth is that we only have what rights we can defend, and nothing more.

Hundreds of millions of people have found this out the hard way, and their mass graves serve as final testimony to the bitterness of the lesson.

I pray that no one reading this will ever forget it.
