BT invites homeowners to share their broadband with passers-by

technology.timesonline.co.uk

Homeowners are being invited to share their internet connections with passers-by in return for the right to access the network via other people’s connections.

The attempt to expand the nation’s wi-fi network will mean that anybody with one of the latest mobile phone handsets, such as the Apple iPhone and some BlackBerrys, can access the internet through the front window of a participating home.

I'm not sure what to make of this news. I can see how it can be good, but then I can also see how it can be abused.

I wonder if this idea will float. I see plenty of potential opposition to it.

The majority of average folks out there wouldn't be able to properly secure their private data without help, if they participated in this...

I'm not sure this is such a good idea...For me, there's just so many security issues to deal with...

If it were me, yeah, I'd have a go at it...Because I know how to secure things just right...But I'd want slightly better benefits than just being able to access the networks of fellow users...

I'd like to see the ISP to not count data downloaded by others when it comes to my monthly allowance or whatever...That would make it a fair deal IMO...

Peace

Wasn't there a lengthy thread not long back about someone who got arrested for exactly this? Are BT now asking UK residents to aid and abet criminals?

The first thing I thought of when I saw/read this was packet loss while online gaming. Selfish and immature? Perhaps. But a 1.2 second delay can cost me a life or a kill.

That, and if I am paying for my ISP, do I get a break if it's shared? Do overall costs increase? I would an have an issue paying for a service and then being FORCED to share it. Someone else has already touched upon someone else using your connect for questionable purposes, which is also a concern.
