Actually, Flyer's recommendations makes the most sense for people who aren't on the up-and-up with computer technology. Don't get me wrong, I understand everything you posted. On my own personal computer I use nothing but SysInternals tools.. no AV, no FW. Just ProcessExplorer and TcpView.
But I wouldn't dream of recommending it to my clients (I fix computers in my spare time) because even with both a virus scanner and a firewall, they always manage to get their boxes infected anyway If I suggested to them what you have suggested, I'd probably get calls in the middle of the night from them asking me to repeat step so-and-so again despite the fact that I've already printed out a nice easy-to-follow instruction set, which they'll not get anyway... so in the end it's kind of a moot point. But never mind that, otherwise I wouldn't have a nice side income. That was probably the point Flyer was trying to make (though he wasn't as tactful).

Now, let's put aside our computer skillz egos for a while, and let's get back to the main topic of discussion, ok?

Google is in the midst of acquiring DoubleClick. For those who aren't too sure what the significance of this is, the company provides ad-serving services, usually with the help of a tracking cookies which monitors users as they go from site to site. The cookie compiles a list of sites you go to in order to "better serve targeted advertising" to consumers.
Google herself already has a large database of it's users, much like all the other internet ad giants. This acquisition will make her even more formidable. Imagine -- DoubleClick's tracking system combined with Google's AdSense (which analyses the pages you visit to serve targeted ads). A demonstration of AdSense technology can be seen on this very website. Notice how the little text ads at the side of each page seems to fit the subject of discussion on each page?
There's probably no conspiracy here, but it's still worrying the amount of power Google is acquiring. I'm just hoping they still stick to their mantra of "you don't have to be evil to make money."

Why does ATS use Google's search engine at the top of the page?
Why haven't you switched to a different search engine or use your League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to create a search engine best suited for this site. I can tell you from personal experience, and I have read many others ... the Google site search leaves a sour taste in the mouth - poor results and sometimes is the cause of duplicate threads

As a computer professional I can tell you WITHOUT A DOUBT.. YES!
Not so much Norton, Norton just sucks.. however -
Google Desktop scans and records ALL OF YOUR FILES. ALL OF YOUR INTERNET HISTORY, ALL OF YOUR INFORMATION (Including location).
Google (standalone search) - RECORDS ALL OF YOUR SEARCH HISTORY IF YOU HAVE A GMAIL ACCOUNT YOU ARE REGULARLY SIGNED INTO. WITHOUT AN ACCOUNT IT JUST RECORDS YOUR IP ADDRESS.
ITUNES - Notorious for recording information in an extremely un-secure fashion.
