our school is too small for a police officer, less than 900 kids. but the amount of drugs that come through is scary. we had a k-9 unit come through a few years back, and so many people got busted, and the dogs found so much stuff in lockers and cars, it was rediculous.
our school does do a random drug test, and a lot of people get caught through that.

To answer your question there is no legally binding reason for you to be demanded to wear said id card. if you dont feel like wearing it tell them you are afriad a pervert will walk onto campus and see your name and stock you, and then if theay continue to make you wear it after that send them a written note trhough certified mail (make a copy!) sighn it and make sure you cover the whole pervert thing. if after all this you are still made to wear it you can go to court aganist it with the letter as proof of your obvious intent to mediate a problem before it occured. but ok bud hope that helps.

I'm not in High School but it is always good to have your I.D card. Does your high school have gates operated by cards and security guards who monitor the usage of the gates?

IF so, the card will prove useful.

Ordering food is process which should nto require any I.D. It is likely that the canfeteria/food hall/canteen staff are a contracted organisation therefore there would be no need for security checks as they are in it for profit.

Want to buy something that is illegal to people under a certain age - carry I.D or don't expect it be able to make the purchase

In these cases I.D is a good thing. A biometric I.D for reasons which cannot be justified and costs alot more than anyone can afford is not.

When I was in high school, we had to carry out picture IDs (which were color-coded depending on what grade you were in), but only needed them to get into dances or buy lunch. They had a barcode that was scanned to deduct money from a prepaid account for lunch. If you had no money for lunch, and brought cash, you could still buy with that. If you forgot your card, they could access the account with your student number.

We did have to wear nametags at all times. If you wore a sweatshirt, the nametag had to be on that. Had to be on the outermost layer of your uniform. First name, last name, year of graduation. You got written up for not having it, and after three times being written up, you got Saturday detention. It was a private school.

My mother is a dean of discipline at a public high school. The students there are required to wear picture ID clipped to their uniforms at all times. That's because there has been so many fights and issues in the past. This way, a teacher might not know a student, but can identify who was involved in a fight, or who was where they weren't supposed to be, etc. They have also had problems where expelled students came back to fight people or start fires. When you are expelled, they take your ID away. So if someone doesn't have an ID on, it's an automatic redflag that there is a problem.

When you get out of school, just take it off. Maybe you should ask to speak with your principal or someone like that. Explain your concerns about wearing it, and ask why they are required. Do this in a calm and mature manner, and you're more likely to be heard. You may not change anything, but at least you'll get an explanation for why it's required.

If you do that, and are still upset, maybe you should contact the school board. Ask if this is something that is standard for the school district, or specific to just your school.

It's unlikely that you'll get this policy changed, though. Schools have a duty to provide a safe learning environment for their students, and students are limited with respect to certain rights in order for that safe environment to be accomplished. It sucks when you're there, but the good news is that you're only there for a few years.

Good luck to you. It could be worse... I had to wear penny loafers every damn day at my high school.

Near the end of last school year my school stopped using ID Cards, it might seem nice BUT ITS NOT because they have switched over to scan our fingers instead. It is only for school lunches but still its flipping scary because everytime I get my finger scanned I feel as if I am going to have something bad happen to everyone. The finger scanner thing is hooked up to a computer which I still think is bad because it can easily get hacked into and all of our index fingerprints are on that computer which can be used in a bad way. I definatly hate these things. Whats next?? our eyes. I plan on confronting teachers about this or something. Because I do not want my lil brother who is in 2nd grade to go through this crap. Oh and another thing our school wasn't made aware of this switch , I mean they didn't tell our parents or anything that I can remember.

hmm. maybe i'm naive, but i don't see what the big deal about high school id's are.

for my school, it's pretty simple. you get an id card at some point during the first few weeks of school. once you have it, you can use it for lunch to keep an account(but you can just pay cash and bypass the card) and you use it to get books from the library. they also have us turn in our id's to the library in exchange for a mini laptop we can take home for homework and then get the id back the next morning when we turn in the laptop. you are required to have it on your person and you do have to show it to a staff member if requested.

they aren't required for entry, and we don't have to wear them anymore. from Columbine to 2004, we did, though.

I don't see what the big deal is. to me, it seems like it's mostly to simplify the cafeteria line(God knows it takes long enough to get through the line, what with the number of people going through and how they always run out of food - last lunch sucks) and borrowing items from the library. I don't know of anyone getting carded so far.

This is the first year my school has really been big on ID cards, we've always had to have one, but they never really checked if we actually had them on us unless we were checking out a book from a library. (which they usually just said they'd make an exception anyways.) We had a PiN number for lunch (Still do actually).

This year, however, if you don't have it you get a temporary label with your name you have to wear on your shirt, second time? You get a detention I believe, and more severe punishments as the number of times you get caught without one increases.

Teachers will randomly check, though to be honest, most don't care, there's just a few (mainly the older ones) that will get up in your face about it if you don't have one.

Actually, the other day I forgot mine, (second time this year) I kind of snuck around the school avoiding teachers as I went to class, made it to the last hour of the day and got stopped for not having it, interestingly enough I lied (I don't condone this by the way) and said it was in my bag and I'd put it on, and it worked.

I just graduated a few months ago, but I doubt much has changed at my old school.

We had to wear an ID at all time, my Sophmore year they changed it to where it had to be around your neck (no clip-on option). The year before I was there, they had colored-coded IDs by grade, but my time there they were just white with some wording (and of course your picture, name, grade level, and a barcode). Your ID was used to check out both library and school books. It wasn't until my Senior year that they became what many of my friends refered to as "ID Nazis." They would literally yell at you from 20 feet away to put on your ID and they would have random checks in the middle of class where either the Principle or Vice-Principles would have everyone hold up their ID. The second half of my Senior year they added the "Tardy Calculator." Basically, if you were tardy, you had to go to one of two machines, scan your ID, get the piece of paper it would print out, and then go to class. The piece of paper was the only way you could get into class late (unless you had a pass from a teacher). Three tardies equaled an absence and detention (tardies four and so on you just be a detention/Saturday school), you were allowed two for each class for a semester.

They were really strict on you having your ID at all times, but you could use whatever lanyard you wanted (you could even put buttons on it). You had to pay $5 for your first one, and then another $5 if you lost yours. However, if you didn't have an ID, $5 or a way home, and it was before school, you could go to the Vice-Principles office and get a temporary ID that would last for that school day.

I personally never really had a problem with the IDs, it was more funny to me than anything how much they would yell at kids. I also never really lost mine, but I had friends that would spend easily $60 a year in new IDs.

hm...in my high school they give out picture IDs with barcodes but no one asks for them so they are pretty much useless.
Students can use little tickets from a booklet to get food and they give out replacement tickets to those who say they lost their tickets(which is ALOT).
We have a full time officer in our school, with patrols ALL the time, yet anyone can enter the premises or leave without worrying about having an ID
