I have an official USAF poster of a space plane that never even made it to wind tunnel testing. The poster shows it in orbit.

And the X-15 would do nothing for a space plane. It was incapable of going into orbit. They gave the pilot astronaut wings, but they only went to 50 miles. That's still well below the Karman Line, that delineates space from the atmosphere. Technically they were still in the Mesosphere.
As the U.S. steps up research and development for hypersonic weapons, DARPA has awarded Aerojet Rocketdyne a contract to demonstrate a turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine that could power a reusable high-speed aircraft from takeoff to beyond Mach 5.
The award comes amid reports that Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works is making progress toward flying an F-22-sized, TBCC-powered flight research vehicle by 2020 as a precursor to the larger SR-72 high-speed aircraft proposed for the late 2020s.Aerojet Rocketdyne To Demo Combined-Cycle Hypersonic Engine
