How do I do this?
Probably a silly question to some, but I get very frustrated posting links when I could just post the graphs, pics, tables etc

Budski, unfortunately, they have made in near impossible to post pics and graphs from outside sources. You have to get the rights to those images, else, you have to post it as an external image.

Mission impossible...

Not...

Here are the relevant links regarding image hotlinking, size, and the BB Code to do it.

1. Upload the picture you want to a host, like i.e. Uploadit.org, Photobucket, Imageshack, etc.

2. post the link of the picture within ats-tags

Like this:

[ats]http://premium1.uploadit.org/Hellmutt//santasign.jpg[/ats]

...to get this:

After posting that I was not clear on image posting rules, I was able to understand it.

The main thrust is two-fold:

1. you don't want to be posting proprietary content - i.e. someone else's images without express permission.
2. you want to be a good Netizen and not steal bandwidth from other sites (even though you aren't profiting from it).

(note: If a site decides that people are stealing their images, they may even post a default image to be copied out and it might display as an embarassing picture on ATS.)

So just get permission, then host the image on an approved site like Imageshack or Photobucket which offer free hosting. I use www.photobucket.com...

How to do it:

1. for your own hosted images or images on ATS, use [ ats] tags [ /ats](omit the leading space in your code)
2. for newsources such as news.yahoo.com you may link their images but must use [ im] tags [ /im]. These display the URL of the originating site as a line under the photo.
3. for external images (i.e. not to steal bandwidth, but permission still granted, use [ img] tags [ /img]. These will just display a hotlink which looks like this: external image

Note when using im-tags, the link to the picture will be shown below the picture in your post. So beware of sometimes extreme long links.

The best is always to host the picture youself and use ats-tags. Then only you control the picture, and it doesn't suddenly turn into a porn picture or something...

Thanks guys, that's much clearer - although it seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to

Maybe I'll just use it when it's really needed, for clarity.

I've gottng to the point to where I don't post pictures anymore, or, if I do, I post them as an external link.

Yeah, it gets to be laborious to post pictures, but you can streamline the process.

1. Keep your paint program open and minimized, then 'copy' the image using the right mouse click;
2. Paste into paint program, resize, rename, save to desktop;
3. Keep a tab open to your hosting account with the default location to find new files as the desktop;
4. Click the upload tab at your hosting site, and select the image, which should appear at the top of the column.
5. Rightclick to copy the link to the clipboard.
6. Paste into ATS message space.

Sometimes you can grab an image while you're proofreading in another tab, saving time.

Sorry it's not much help, but if anyone else has tips they can add them.

So if I take a picture my self with my own camera I can not post it to ATS. I have to upload it to a 3rd party and then hot link over to it? I am surprised that any one every post pictures on ATS if that is the case. Almost more trouble than it is worth unless I am missing somethere here.

Go to ATS Media. Login with your ATS username and password. Go to your picture gallery. Upload your picture(s). And then you can post them. Here's a picture from my gallery:

This command:

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/0b097debb3fd.jpg[/atsimg]

= this result:

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/0b097debb3fd.jpg[/atsimg]

and this command:

[ats]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/0b097debb3fd.jpg[/ats]

= this result:

Ok...I guess that was a bad example since the pic was so big. The first version is centered and the below version isn't. Another example below:

This command:

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/1a3dff6a12ee.jpg[/atsimg]

= this result:

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/1a3dff6a12ee.jpg[/atsimg]

and this command:

[ats]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/1a3dff6a12ee.jpg[/ats]

= this result:
