Similar to Meridan Plaza fire in Philadelphia (1990) - 3 FF killed there
when became disoriented in smoke. For tinfoilers who are screaming that
building didn't collapse from fire -
Building was empty, there were no furnishings or tons and tons of
paper to fuel fire. More office furnishings are now made of plastics
such as chairs, cubicle dividers, desks are wood chip/sawdust held
together by plastic resins, carpets. Computers/printers/monitors
are mostly plastics. They burn hotter than ordinary materials
Fire was fueled by wood for staffoldings
Fire was well vented (no windows/partitions) so heat could escape
There were no standdpipes/sprinklers in operation which required FF
to haul up lenghts of hose to pipe water up to where fire was.
3 months ago piece of sprinkler pipe broke lose and crashed into nearby
firehouse.
At Meridian Plaza restrictor valves in standpipes cut water flow
and forced FF to haul lenghts of 5" hose up stairways to provide more
water
Once realize men were missing all operations were shifted to search and
rescue and available manpower would be used for rescue. This
impacted fire fighting.
