William T. Sewerd bought Alaska from Russia in 1867. We did so in our belief in manifest destiny.

Saying that " the place was crap" is opinionated- the Russians actually did not know what vast resources Alaska held, as they really did not branch outwards of coastal fishing communities, and the Aleutians.
This is the most beautiful state in our country, and the largest. And of great stragetic importance in todays times.
ANMAN, have you ever been here (Alaska) ?

Sure does, many times over I am sure- and also here is the US Navy Stragetic Oil Reserve- untoched and ready to pump if we need it. As long as Bush doesn't have his way. He is pushing for drilling there- another name is the Artic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWAR.
And our nation depends heavily on our North Slope Crude pumped from the North Slope, shipped out of Valdez, pumped across South America, and then shipped from there to what we call the "lower 48"- the rest of the nation.

The Russian fleet anchored off San Francisco during the civil war to support the north against the south. The U.S. bought Alaska from the Russians to pay the Russians for their support in the American Civil War.

At the the time, there was no direct way to pay Russia, so it was decided to buy Alaska from Russia as a way to pay them.

It was referred to as Seward's Folly. And was at the time, as today, unknown except to the elite.

Here's an excerpt from my book, which in turn is excerpted from Eustace Mullins, 'Secrets of the Federal Reserve'.

Cost of supporting the Russian fleet to the U.S. was 7 million dollars. Johnson didn’t have constitutional authority to give money to a foreign government ...so, arrangements were made to purchase Alaska from the Russians, in Apr. 1867. It was labeled, ‘Seward’s Folly’ ...because, it appeared Seward purchased a worthless piece of land ...when in fact, it was compensation paid to Russian Navy.

You might consider reading Mullins -- it's a mind blower.

From what I remember in high school, Canada and America were bickering over who gets Alaska. There was supposed to be 6 judges to choose who gets it, and if I remember correctly, there was 2 American judges, 3 British Judge, and 1 Canadian judge. I don't know why it wasn't 2, 2, and 2, or why there wasn't any French judges too.

I totally forget the details and Google isn't helping me much, but from what I remember the British judges were coerced or bribed by the Americans. As a result they sided with the Americans and Alaska was sniped from Canada.

Alaska is the most beautiful part of the United States. I've been to most parts of it over the years and loved every bit of it, save for Anchorage, it's largest city.

Alaska holds the destiny of the United States. Sewerd was, obviously, a very forward thinker...lol. Gold, oil, and nature's bounty, along with natures beauty...Alaska has it all.
