Bush Wants House to Pass "Spy Bill"

apnews.myway.com

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush appealed to the Democratic-controlled House for swift passage Saturday of legislation that would expand the government's powers to eavesdrop on suspected foreign terrorists.

"Protecting America is our most solemn obligation and I urge the House to pass this bill without delay," Bush said in a statement released as the president flew to Minneapolis to view the collapsed highway bridge.

Senate Democrats reluctantly agreed to passing a bill Friday night *snip*

Saw this in my email news this morning (8/4), thought you would all be interested in reading it. The article says this will update the FISA and they want to get it done pretty quickly.

Citizen we are working so hard to protect you ! Why do you resist !

It looks like the Bush regime knows their moment of opportunity is fading fast so they're going for the shotgun effect.

Let the good times roll !

Here's another article on it.

I think that it's halarious that it says:

The laws would "allow the NSA warrantless access to virtually all international communications of Americans with anyone outside the US, so long as the Government declared that the surveillance was directed at people, which includes foreigners and citizens, reasonably believed to be located outside the US."

They don't have to be. They can just think that they might be and that's ok. What a sad joke it is that our govenment has become.

Couldn't have said it better.

The decider demands... the decider gets. We haven't even asked to give up our rights to obtain a false sense of security... he's but demanded it.

Crooked Executive Branch...
Spineless Legislative Branch...
Judicial Branch... A.G.A.G... :shk:

I'm at a loss for words as I watch our Constitution go down the drain.

How could anyone not want to OK spying on the enemy?

Al-Queda turned the U.S. into a battlefield. If you can't carry out simple battlefield intelligence, then prepare for another attack, and we won't know anything about it till it happens.

I realize that there are some who want America defeated in the war on terror because they don't like its leader. It's a shame but it's true.

There's plenty that would agree, the real terrorists are in the White House.

This is the kind of story that just makes me fume with anger. The only reason this is being turned into law is because the government was caught doing it in secret illegally! I like to think I'm an imaginative person but even I can stretch my logic so far as to think this is going to be used on "terrorists" in other countries.

Day by day we lose more of our freedoms, we move closer to a fascist dictatorial country and all anyone is worried about is getting an IPhone. Well guess what, your IPhone will also be a tool for government monitoring.

People say "I'm not doing anything wrong", yeah maybe not right now, but in a few years if you tell someone you don't like what the president is doing you'll be doing something wrong just like in China.

It's your freedom! Why are you giving it up??? I don't get it, I can't wrap my mind around it! Why would anyone condone to a loss of freedoms, even a minute loss of freedom?!?! This country is the "Land of the Free" and used to be the "Home of the brave" but what are we now? "Land of the watched and Home of the Brainwashed"??

Please, anyone, give me one good reason why we should ever give up our freedoms to an oversized inefficient government full of corrupt officials who can't protect us when the time comes to do so?? (911, Katrina etc)

One reason, one logical reason why we should give up our most sacred rights. Anyone?

If you would like to see the text of this law, click on the link that I've provided. In the long run, this FISA upgrade can and will have some scary implications. We are not wrong to question this.

I agree, it is our duty as citizens to keep the government in check and people have been ignoring their duties for far too long.

Americans are not the enemy.
Or are they? Whose side are you on anyway?

Al-Queda turned the U.S. into a battlefield.

ONE highly suspicious terrorist attack does not make America a battlefield.

You are the one that wants America defeated my 'conservative' friend.
You are willing to sacrifice thousands of our boys and billions of our dollars in far away lands over WMD that didnt exist and Iraqis that had absolutly nothing to do with 911, going by the official story.

Empires collapse from over extension. Thats what happens to them.
They dont just fade away for no reason. They implode.
You are watching America collapse and you are in fact rooting it on by suggesting that we should continue on full steam ahead.

If you really love this country and this bogus never ending war on terror then I highly recommend that you sign up that the nearest recruiting center.
We need more gung-ho patriotic men like you to send over there and kill some brown skins because this 15 month triple rotation crap is starting to wear the military down.
So yeah, quit telling me and others who are concerned about the future of our country that we want America defeated.
We want a strong America with closed borders, immigration enforcement, and a foreign relations program that doesnt involve invading other nations and then driving around foreign streets until the road blows up beneath us.

You are a fear monger, plain and simple.
America is a battlefield....

Go live in Iraq for a while, get shot at, see some of your buddies get blown up, kill yourself some brownies and then come back here and tell me how America is a battlefield.

I wake up everyday and thank God I was born in America! If I want to get shot at I don't have to go to Iraq. All I have to do is travel about 150 miles and go to certain sections of New Orleans.

BTW I did the "recruiting center" deal about 20 years ago. I was part of the force that brought about the end of the "Cold War." You know the whole "Peace through Strength" era.

My son is turning 18 in January and was doing some research about the Armed Forces. He asked me what I thought, and I told him, "You would be just as safe in Iraq as you would on the interstate on any given weekend." If not more so.

BTW Al-Queda thanks you for your support!

Marg, do you think its safe to voice your displeasure to congress? Do you think they'll automatically put you on a list of unhappy campers for future reference?
Do you think they may put you on a "no fly" list?
I dont think its safe to email anyone, IMO.

Great, so Bush thinks he has the right to spy on Canada openly does he?

I'm going to be pushing government here in Canada to see if they can route communications through Montreal's International comm hub and ensure that none are routed through New York.

I'm pretty sure that's already in the works though. They'll be debating that up here soon. This poses an issue for the national security of Canada, we cannot allow our inner governments communications within Canada to be listened to by some slack jawed hick in the states, simply because the telecommunications companies decided they can save a few bucks by routing through New York.

Get rid of that wannabe dictator for us will ya? He's starting to tick us off.

No offense dg, I don't mean this as a personal attack against you. But this is exactly the type of thinking that is dooming us all.

We oppose Bush yet he stays in power, we don't support the War on Terror yet it still goes on, we don't support the Income tax system yet it still goes on, we don't want a central bank yet we still have one, we don't want domestic surveillance yet they do it anyway, we want immigration reform yet they won't do it, we want job security and they don't care, we want affordable health care but they don't listen, we want our freedom and they take it away, the list is endless.

This is not what America is supposed to be!

We are supposed to be a country governed FOR the PEOPLE BY the PEOPLE but these days the people are too afraid to speak out against the government lest they be "put on a list". This type of thinking has ensured that you have already lost your right to free speech, your right to choose your own political beliefs, your right to self governance, your right to speak out.

America was founded on the belief that a country's leaders should be chosen by those they will be leading and stay in power only at the approval of those they lead.

Today's government is seen as a looming omniscient, omnipotent power that is separate from us as citizens. Nothing could be further from the truth!!

They can put me on any list they want, they can arrest me, beat me, ship me off to Cuba but this is my God damn country and no one is going to take it from me.

Just seen this statement and wanted to comment on it:

Bush said. "And when these same legal tools also protect the civil liberties of Americans, then we can have the confidence to know that we can preserve our freedoms while making America safer."

What an idiot.

This story angered me too, that's why I posted it to begin with. It's not that we are condoning anything... it's not that we're just sitting back, watching the tube and letting America go to you-know-where in a handbasket... I think many of us just don't know what to do anymore, because nothing seems to be working! We feel overwhelmed, I know I sure do. Sure this land and its government is supposed to be of the people, by the people, for the people... but is it really? Is it really like that? Many of us, myself included, have written... and written... and written.... and talked and talked and talked.... and yet the Steamrollers march on and do what they want, when they want, the way the want... whether we like it or not. We see what's going on, but how to stop it? Writing letters is great, and I have written quite a few myself... but do the guys in charge even care anymore, if they ever did? They might let us have the smaller issues... but when it comes to the really big stuff... I would like to think they listen to us but in reality... I wonder if it does one ounce of good.

The very fact that people say "How can you let this happen, how can we just watch our freedoms go down the drain..." when so many of us *are* doing what we can and are *not* just sitting around watching our freedoms disappear... that just makes me wonder all the more. Because obviously, we don't see the change, regardless of our writing and talking and hoping, our freedoms *are* disappearing, and there's not one dang thing we can do about it. I"m not saying we should stop writing and calling our reps... I'm just saying that the whole thing gets very disheartening.
I have always been very patriotic in my youth but the more I see, the more I wonder if the America I always believed in still even exists anymore. I know there are still a few good people in government and I appreciate what they do... but they get steamrolled too when push comes to shove, and they only have limited power to begin with. We have no idea of all that may be at work behind the scenes, things we have no way of knowing, things that don't get put on the news channels (which some say is controlled to a large extent anyway).

Not to sound completely jaded, but sometimes if I wonder if the whole thing's been lost already, and we're just the last to know.
