Russian Sub plants flag under North Pole and claims resources

Russia wants to extend right up to the North Pole the territory it controls in the Arctic, believed to hold vast reserves of untapped oil and natural gas, which is expected to become more accessible as climate change melts the ice.

Russian explorers dived deep below the North Pole in a submersible overnight and planted their national flag on the seabed to stake a symbolic claim to the energy riches of the Arctic.
A mechanical arm dropped a specially made, rust-proof titanium flag painted with the Russian tricolour onto the Arctic seabed at a depth of 4261 metres.

International law states that the five states with territory inside the Arctic Circle, Canada, Norway, Russia, The United States and Denmark, via its control of Greenland, have a 320 km ‘Economic Zone’ surrounding their Northern coastlines. Russia says the mission is intended to show that the “Lomonosov ridge, a 1800 km underwater mountain range that extends under the Arctic pole, is a geological extension of Russian territory.”

Don't get me wrong Russias a great country and all as they have produced many great mathematicians and physicists but is it only getting this much publicity because the country trying to claim it is Russia?
Is it more of a political matter at hand?
Is the US just making Russia out to be the bad guys here because as if they wouldn't love to get there hands on the resources too.

I love how some of the west media is trying to make Putins actions look like a "crazy land grab by a crazy man" when what he's trying to do is supported under UN rules. Other countries are lining up to do the exact same thing (including Canada and the US). But because Russia got to it first they gotta get lamb basted by our "news" media.

Don't make me laugh ! Oh wait, it's too late !
