As I have already stated, and as yeti101 so kindly re-iterated, those cameras aren't there to take pretty pictures. Every single NASA owned camera in space is there for a specific purpose, most of those cameras you see the footage from are there to help ensure and maintain vehicle integrity, a job they're not going to do very well if they point them into space.

hmmm your' telling me they dont look for themselves? of course they do !! But they dont show us ? why?

You'd think an Alien race travelling such a vast distance would rather reveal them selves to the brightest among us than to the mentally retarded. The first question can be answered very easily. Sure unidentified flying objects are real, they're unidentified because you don't have a clue

LMAO did u just call a lot of people here on ATS inbred stupid rednecks?
possibly even some of the real high up guys i mean they wouldnt dedicate so much time on this site if they hadnt had any personal experiences? (owners) i personally would be intrested how many of the 3 amigos and mods actually have had experiences themself.

And what the hell is your problem with the virgin video ..it clearly states its PROMOTIONAL!!!! so how is it propaganda? they wanna sell tickets well DUH welcome to the worlds first COMMERCIAL space company. so how do you expect them to act?..on the other hand we have NASA, up there for the good of mankind advancing science for the sake of the world . yet there footage looks like a chimp operating a camera phone frankly.

you also are choosing to ignore certain things people post and are picking and choosing what to reply to, i myself thanked u for posting these videos , but the niceties are over bring it it on sunshine!!

You are trying to turn this thread which had a valid question into (OP/ME) i believe in ALIENS ufo constantly visiting our planet??? .. u sir have no idea what i believe.

i asked a simple question and you have obviously read into it a little to much no one mentioned aliens ..until you did.

You're stealing jokes from a joke thief and using them to argue on ATS? Time to stop watching Mind of Mencia.

Seriously, that argument is so hack I don't even believe that you believe it. Speaking in completely unverifiable and incorrect absolutes like "only ever" on a site with a "deny ignorance" catchphrase is a bit ironic, isn't it? Either that, or you were indeed trying to be funny. Well, how about you leave the funny to people who know funny, and you can stick to proper grammer. Believe me, I'd love to rip into you for slinging comedy cliches like they're poignant pearls of wisdom, but the mods around here frown on verbal assault, as I see you've already discovered.

Sorry I don't talk ambiguities so you'll have to be a little more specific. But if you mean do they look out in to space? Sure they do, they just don't have cameras pointed at things that don't serve a purpose to the mission at hand, why would they point cameras that have been put in place to provide feedback for specific areas of the mission, like vehicle integrity and docking, at the vast emptiness of space and a bunch of stars that are unimportant to the mission? They have telescopes for that. If you were out at sea on a ship, and your job was to dock that ship with an offshore oil rig, would you point your equipment at the sky, or at the horizon in completely the wrong direction? I hope not. These guys are professionals, not tourists.

LMAO did u just call a lot of people here on ATS inbred stupid rednecks?

I'm not sure, have a lot of people here on ATS been abducted?

And what the hell is your problem with the virgin video ..it clearly states its PROMOTIONAL!!!! so how is it propaganda? they wanna sell tickets well DUH welcome to the worlds first COMMERCIAL space company.

I don't, I was making a point about your hypocrisy. I think it's great what Virgin and other companies are striving to achieve.

on the other hand we have NASA, up there for the good of mankind advancing science for the sake of the world . yet there footage looks like a chimp operating a camera phone frankly.

Yes, "advancing science" being the operative phrase there, taking pretty pictures for conspiracy theorists doesn't advance science. And I think I've already proven you wrong on the footage issue, unless of course you're blind, or NASA have highly trained chimps with high-quality camera phones. Mind you, with the level of reasoning prevalent on this thread what is a human other than a highly trained chimp?

You are trying to turn this thread which had a valid question into (OP/ME) i believe in ALIENS ufo constantly visiting our planet??? .. u sir have no idea what i believe.

Not at all, I clearly addressed your question, further to that I was simply addressing the implications already made on this thread. What exactly are you implying if not that? Since NASA clearly releases footage that isn't "crummy black and white pictures that are always fuzzy or crap".

i asked a simple question and you have obviously read into it a little to much no one mentioned aliens ..until you did.

You'd have to be a fool to not see the glaring implications made by many of the posts on this thread. If those implications are not about Aliens they must be about human activities, what else would there be to hide? If it is about human activities, why exactly do you expect them to show you?

You're stealing jokes from a joke thief and using them to argue on ATS? Time to stop watching Mind of Mencia.

Sorry, but what's "Mind of Mencia"?

Seriously, that argument is so hack I don't even believe that you believe it. Speaking in completely unverifiable and incorrect absolutes like "only ever" on a site with a "deny ignorance" catchphrase is a bit ironic, isn't it?

Ironic indeed it is!

As far as I'm aware no mod has spoken or dealt with me yet, so I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. But here's to hypocrisy, irony, and assumptions eh?

Sorry, correct that, apparently I've been warned, not that this forum actually tells you such things. I only noticed after you hinted at it and I had to go looking for the actual warning message. What I've been warned about is another question, apparently it's something to do with my conduct on this thread, but what misconduct I have actually committed would be a handy pointer. You guys don't half like your roundabouts. I thought the whole point of this forum was to uncover truths?

If you want to persist in trolling this thread, then you would appear far more intelligent if you left out incorrect generalisations, such as the one I quoted above.

It might save you from scoring more warnings, or even being banned.

your Post before this one was constructive and put your point of view across well, i liked it and will admit this.. i like having someone to bounce off it makes me think deeper..

i think its your approach in previous posts that comes across as a little insulting , you have good points to make but have not made them in the right way untill your last lenghty post ..

keep the good opinions flowing just leave out the insulting remarks
and this will lead to a constructive debate

Trolling how? I've aimed to address the questions have I not? Simply because you feel insulted does not mean I am a troll.

And really, in a subject full of ambiguities and misrepresentations, who's proponents of which happily derogate scientists and rational thinkers, people hardly have the place to wave the anti-generalisation flag. People who believe things without hard evidence and rational judgement to back them up aren't intelligent, I'm sorry but that's reality, reality bites I know, but you've got to face it at some point.

It might save you from scoring more warnings, or even being banned.

I couldn't actually care less what points I've scored or that I've been warned, I was simply pointing out a flaw in this forum in that I had no idea that I'd even been warned until I went searching for it and I still have no idea what specifically I've been warned about. A mod has yet to approach me and explain to me what specifically they don't like about my behaviour. Fact is I only came across this thread while looking for the delete account button because I was fed up of being spammed whatever the latest popular conspiracy is. If I am censored it only serves to prove my point, something quite ironic on a forum that is supposedly about finding out the truth. If I get banned it's no bother to me because it doesn't change the one and only thing I align my self with, reality. You can kick and scream all you like, reality always wins, and that is why I have no shame in what I say, because at the end of the day, reality will prove my point.

I realise I'm a little blunt to say the least, and have a tendency to be quite abrasive, but the fact is I've spent many years of my life trying to reason and rationally debate with conspiracy theorists and the like and it's always resulted in the same thing, me finding out that they really have no point, and them accusing me of being an ignorant unbelieving sheep, so these days I avoid wasting time.

If there wasn't an element of truth in what I say you guys wouldn't be offended. I've seen a lot of slagging and insults thrown around in my time (and believe me if I really wanted to insult somebody on here I'd do a better job than I have been), and through my experience I have noticed one thing, the only people who are ever insulted by what others say are the people for whom those things hit home and the people who have little confidence in what they're saying.

A question to space/astronomy buffs, somewhat on-subject:

Why, in ALL space videos, you see the earth in great detail, and crafts astronauts etc, however, the space around is PITCH BLACK? Shouldnt you see like stars, at the very least? Also isnt space quite colorful? Is this normal, or edited so we dont see "certain details?

i'll try but am not as knowledable as some on the subject . i think it looks totally black because the cameras are set for a shorter range viewing, or its something to that effect. but i could be totally wrong .

the colour aspect i think lots of colours are put on afterwards with regards to the colour of the elements that are present in the area , because this is how we see that far ... (we look for the elements and take pictures with different settings ..(ie infrared and many other spectrums just to be able to see that far)

would someone with more knowledge pls help this guy
thats the best i can come up with

So why then does NASA? that is like supposed to be the best space agency always have crummy black and white pictures that are always fuzzy or crap? and there always shakey!!!

The Branson/Virgin Galactic video is a commercially produced promotional video - it's supposed to look good!

I can think of a number of reasons for the low quality of NASA video, but primarily it's most likely due to bandwidth / storage / budget issues. But I see signs that things are changing at NASA, check this out:

That's pretty much the exact right answer, since most pictures and footage taken in space are of objects many times brighter than the light coming from very distant stars.

The issue is discussed in further detail on these following links:

Hi All

The idea of being able to take a trip into space is quite a thrilling one to me. I have always wanted to experience the kind of view and weightlessness that the astronauts get to experience. I wish had the $200,000 to buy a ticket!

I did find out something interesting when I was perusing the official website Virgin Galactic . It seems that on July 27, 2007 there was an accident at Scaled Composites resulting in the death of 3 people and seriously injuring 3 others. This is the company who built Space Ship One (the one in the video) and who is also building the craft to be used for commercial use. Here is an excerpt from the news story:

Los Angeles Times
By Tami Abdollah and Stuart Silverstein, Times Staff Writers
July 27, 2007

Three workers were killed and three others were badly hurt Thursday afternoon in an explosion on the edge of Kern County's Mojave airport during the test of a propellant system for a pioneering private spaceship.

The blast occurred at a private test site run by Scaled Composites, a company founded by high-profile aviation entrepreneur Burt Rutan.

Source

They are not sure what caused the explosion, but they believe the culprit was nitrous oxide. Here is another quote from the story:

According to Rutan, company employees were examining the rate at which the propellant flows through an opening. He emphasized that the test, conducted at room temperatures, did not involve igniting the rocket motor or sparking any fire.

Source

I wonder if this will cause a severe setback for the proposed first commercial flight of 2009.(Which is completely booked by the way!) At any rate, they are still investigating what caused the explosion. I found it interesting that the company Northrop Grumman had 40% ownership of Scaled Composites, and had just this month decided to buy the company entirely. (It is still pending regulatory approval.)

Here is an excerpt on the company:

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a $30 billion global defense and technology company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in information and services, electronics, aerospace and shipbuilding to government and commercial customers worldwide...

...Northrop Grumman’s aerospace systems operate from the high ground. The company is a premier developer, integrator, producer and supporter of manned and unmanned aircraft, spacecraft, high-energy laser systems, microelectronics and other systems and subsystems critical to maintaining the nation’s security and leadership in science and technology...

...Northrop Grumman puts information to work. As a trusted partner, the company develops systems and solutions that deliver timely, enabling information where it is needed most for its military, intelligence, federal, state and local government, and commercial customers...

More can be read here on their website in the "About Us" section of the site. I know they deal with a lot of secret government projects, and it was one of those things that made me go "hmmmmm".

For some reason I had brief visions of stealth spacecraft equipped with high tech laser-something-or-others ready to destroy "targets" at a moments notice.
Of course that may just be the ATS conspiracy nut in me!

I would still take a ride into space though. Maybe the Universe will send an extra $200,000 my way!

Talk about adding something to your life long "to do" list.

I think that this might cause a new type of mortgage, not for a house, but for a ticket to space. I can imagine banks lining up to loan you the money for a ticket. I see the pop up adds already.

I hope to have the cash on hand to make a trip up there. This would cause a permanent smile on my face and some cool pics to share with everyone. I hope this takes off and they are able to lower the cost so more people can go as well as have the capital coming in to make the fleet bigger.

They do have a mock up of Space Ship One in Alamagordo, lucky for me I got some pics. I would check it out while it is on display. It's pretty cool to see it in person even if it isn't the real thing.

Excellent find. It's about time NASA provide us with HD video. And they went all out, too! They have it in 480, 720p, and 1080i. Now all they need to do is show us those UFO videos they have in HD and we'll be thrilled!

Eventually the price will come down. It might take 10 years, but the price will eventually drop to reasonable rates when there is a large enough fleet and big enough interest shown in personal spaceflight. I don't know how the banks would feel about loaning money out for an endeavor in which you would probably have to sign a waiver (at least for the first few years of flight) stating you or your family will not sue the company if you are injured or killed. But I do see this being a potential enterprise for life insurance companies -- temporary space travel insurance.

I don't see what the problem is... you can just order what you want from NASA, in max quality. I've done it before, in film and photos. Cost me, yes, but you can.

The reason why it isn't out there for mass public view on their website: Processing, hosting, bandwidth, etc.

As said earlier: its not on the high list.

Look at TV, nearly always, Space Footage on those shows are high quality (ones I've seen at least) or near it. Then the same ones on their Site are 10x worse.

Again: Contact them for the high-def footage, pay them, youll get it.

Richard Branson is a great man, i hope he has wild success and drangs the world into space

What he has done is truely amazing, and he will be only followed by more private space technology.

The reason for the $200,000 ticket price is to help the price come down for the mainstream public. That money will go into refining the technologies to make it cheaper.

Actually I believe they stated that only the first 100 flights are at $200,000 then drop to $100,000 and then in the 2nd year the price will be around $20,000.

I hope the first space tourists in SpaceShipTwo bring some ditigal HD camcorders with them and maybe they will record UFOs on their flights... who knows?

That one statement is more than ignorant enough to invalidate just about everything else you have said!
