Ahh, was just about to post this, beat me to it lol.

Question now is, why? ... What did the Bureau have to gain by witholding evidence to deny his innocence?

The way I see it :

A : The FBI was under scrutiny for ineffectiveness at the time, and it was in their best interest to show progress, real or not.

B : The actual guilty party had political backing, and a political scandal could not be afforded at the time.


Anyone want to pull up the news from that time period, check the news on the FBI and current politics at the time?

Just a guess but could it have something to do with J Edgar Hoover? He wasn't exactly squeaky clean.
