Following up swiftly in the wake of Wednesday’s announcement that Orange and PC World will be offering a free laptop, when you agree to a 24-month broadband contract costing £14.99 per month, Dell and the Carphone Warehouse have launched a rival scheme. For signing up to a 12-month AOL broadband contract costing you £19.99 per month, you will be supplied with a voucher entitling you to a free laptop from Dell’s website, specifically the base-model Inspiron 6400 - whatever specification and value that may be at the time.
Currently that would give you a 1.6GHz Celeron, 512MB of RAM an 80GB hard-drive and a 15.4 inch 1,280 x 800 screen – a setup which would otherwise cost you £349 (bear in mind this is Dell, if you're reading this next week that will probably be either 50p or £3,490). Not only that, but you get the option to upgrade the base model to your tastes (within reason) and only pay the difference from the basic specification, as opposed to the PC World/Orange offer which lets you choose different laptops depending on the feature set you want. While the specifications aren’t fantastic, you’re getting them for free and the kind of user who would be attracted to this offer probably won’t want more anyway.
Hopefully Gordon will receive his free Vaio TZ soon. Now all we need is some hover boots!
