I saw this article about the super-rich buying submarines and asked myself why.

It would make sense to travel the ocean floor if you were looking for something (a la the Illuminati Trilogy) or if you were trying to evade something. My reasoning is that if you knew that a small to medium type impactor was about to hit it would make sense to put yourself out of harm's way by getting as low as you can. It also would make sense if you knew that something man-made was going to hit the surface and screw it up for a number of days or weeks.

Given the risks that the owners face (having a navy think you are a torpedo bearing sub) and the secrecy involved in the industry, it seems suspicious that the "super-rich" have decided to take to the (under)seas.

Am I reaching or does this make sense?

Actually personal submarines is the new toys, they actually have one that is a Yacht that is a surface vessel that can dive for 75 million. There is also many reccondiioned subs available for sale, some include underwater habitats too.

I think you hit it on the head kinda with your assumption. What about nuclear war, no outside comet or anything. One could realistically sink in his sub which with some modifications can hold 40 people underwater for 6 months and realistically could go to an underwater habitat and stay there for a long while more to be safe from radiation, or whatever the topside had wrong. Check out the links below and check both HABITATS and SUBS, they have luxury models...

US SUBS

There is also refurb'd ones available a simple web search will give you thosse also...

Subs are used by wealthy drug lords to ship illegal drugs all over the world. Its an effective way to move them with little detection. Oh wait, is already happening all over the place. Take a look at some of these articles.
