FDA says unmoved by Italian report linking aspartame to Cancer

news.yahoo.com

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. consumer group called for an urgent Food and Drug Administration review of the safety of aspartame on Monday, but the FDA said there was no immediate need to do so despite a new study showing the sweetener may cause cancer.

Italian researchers published a new study last week that showed aspartame -- widely used in soft drinks -- might cause leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer in rats.

Aspartame seems to have exploded on the market years ago and one has to wonder if the testing was of the *wink* *wink* variety.

To be fair according to the article the maximum daily dose reccomended in the US is 50 mg / kg of body weight.. So if you are 150 lbs its over 7 cans a day. The Italian research showed the cancer risk at 2X that level.

However, I a suspicious because the FDA does not want to take a look at a chemical that is basically in almost all aspect of our food supply just to make sure. Unless Big Ag / Soda has gotten to them

What is aspartame in? I didn't think it was in regular softdrinks but rather diet drinks and low calorie ones etc... So that the Coke and Pepsis don't have it in them...?

Don't drink any diet sodas which have aspartame. I am austounded that this is just coming out now. There were some studies in the past which seemed to link aspartame to cancer and other illnesses. I drink regular pepsi, appart from Sunny Delight, both which makes me very hyper, and i know pepsi is not very good for my health. I wouldn't recomend anyone to even drink any sorts of sodas, as they are full of chemicals which do no good for people's health. I started to drink ginseng tea more often now which is 100% natural and tastes great.

I wonder why the FDA is unmoved?

Could it be because of the revolving door they've got going on with Monsanto?

You have to wonder eh? They are charged with keeping the public safe and yet when a major product that is consumed by untold millions comes into question what do we get? 'Don't worry be happy".

At the very least, they should take another look at the chemical.

There's several other threads related to this one...here, here, here, here, here & a bit more closely related here.

After browsing links in these threads that lead to independant studies (ie: Non-corporate/non-government funded) on Aspartame, I made a decision to just go back to regular sugar.

I already knew that a government that colludes with Big Corp Interests can't be trusted anyway, but I figured that I'd rather become fat, informed & happy compared to being skinny, dumb & dying in a hospital bed.

What in the world?...

I did't know so many products use aspartame.

Aspartame has been linked to being a low-level carcinagen for a long time now - I first heard about it at least five years ago and I've been amazed that it was never followed up on by food standard agencies and health agencies in either the UK or the US.

I've known about aspartame's problems for quite awhile. I keep trying to tell my friends and family to stop drinking diet soda, but they won't listen. Back in the 80's when Diet Coke with aspartame came out I was thrilled. It tasted a lot better than the old sachrine diet sodas so I drank that all the time.

After about a month of drinking the stuff I was in a grocery store and all of a sudden blacked out. I fell to the floor and everything went black. Odd thing was I could still hear everyone around me. I didn't link it to the soda at the time. Just thought maybe it was the heat. About a month later my dad heard a news report that said there had been several reports of this happening to people and they related it to aspartame. I stopped drinking diet soda (any soda for that matter) and it never happened again. I thought it was strange that you never heard those news reports ever again and they kept the crap on the market.

About 10 years later when trying to lose some weight, I thought I'd try Diet Mountain Dew just in case it wasn't the aspartame after all. (Yeah, I know - how soon we forget). After a couple of weeks of drinking it I blacked out at work. Ok that convinced me!

Don't drink that crap!!

Aspartame aka, NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful and Equal Measure was very well received during the 80s frenzy of diet and exercises.

I was one of those.

What is aspartame made off,

free excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid (about 99 percent of monosodium glutamate (MSG) is glutamic acid) in our food supply are causing serious chronic neurological disorders and a myriad of other acute symptoms.(3)

www.mercola.com...

I started using splenda until bad news came about that product also.

Now I will only use Stevia, expensive but natural, at least until somebody comes out with something bad about it.

Sweet Misery

Excellent documentary showing how dangerous artificial sweetner Aspartame is. From its history, to its effects this video is enough to shock anyone into really looking at their food labels next time they shop. Aspartame is a toxic food that came into the world as an investment By Donald Rumsfeld, while ignoring the deadly effects the tests showed. Take a good look at this video, it could save lives.

I highly recommend educating yourself about GD Searle & Company (pharmaceutical) and one of the "greatest scientific frauds" of our time.

Aspartame is made of amino acids - proteins. Same stuff your body and DNA are made of.

As long as you dont have phenylketonuria (rare condition where you cannot process phenylalanine), you're fine.

It's just protein man. Thats why they called it NutraSweet - its nutritional!

Now, Splenda, is a whole different story. Thats a chlorocarbon originally developed at Queens College as an insecticide until they figured out it tasted sweet.

I'm sure everyone has a "side" to this already, which is kinda dumb considering very few of you have actually researched these products for your self and had discussions with industry insiders, and performed lab tests.

Just go ahead an prepare for a flame war... people have heart-felt "opinions" about this stuff.

A lot of things are proteins, that's just a kind of molecule. A classification. They can be just as harmful as anything else.

...And, uh, no. DNA is not made of protein.

Anyway, I don't eat or drink anything with aspartame in it, if just because I hate the taste of the stuff. You can tell if something has it before you buy it by looking at the ingredients. Aside from listing either aspartame or phenylalanine, they usually have an additional warning in somewhat larger, bold print.

My father was the EVP of Research and Development for NutraSweet for a long time... and that's why I'm going to avoid this discussion.

If I recall, the sweet-tasting acid is produced by bacteria with one or more genetic modifications. The bacteria were 'made better' by Monsanto, and Monsanto controlled NutraSweet for some time, before a sale of same took place.

I should take this thread and paste it into this one Most Powerful Organized Crime Entity? because this thread illustrates my point wonderfully.

My dad's (ex-NutraSweet EVP of R&D) response to this thread...

Europeans have been trying to claim this for many years.....tree
huggers. Every time they do this the study is duplicated in the US and
found to be untrue. Just costs NS millions. FDA is even tired of the
claims.

Well he sounds like a huge dick then, calling them "tree huggers." I can't believe someone in that position would be so immature.

I guess I'd better not do any scientific research either. People might call me names!
