"UFO hunters around the world started buzzing. Apparently, Raji wasn't alone. Elsewhere, other alleged eyewitnesses posted pictures and video of the quirky little craft. It became known as the "California drone" because it was clear from the photos that no human could have fit inside to fly the thing.

Soon, the mystery became too tantalizing to be left to Internet speculators. Somebody who knew what he was doing had to be hired to locate that pole, which might lead to finding the elusive Raji.

Enter Davis, 62, and Dixon, 60.

Men in Black they're not. To cover his middle-age paunch, Davis prefers windbreakers and blue jeans to the crisp suits of Hollywood's extraterrestrial sleuths. Dixon is more Man in White. On this day, he's wearing a Vegas-bright white sweater suitable for the first tee at the golf course -- which is where he spends most of this time since retiring from police work seven years ago.

"See how close that one is?" Dixon says of one power pole, comparing it with a photo. Their SUV is easing along a shady street, its cab cloudy with smoke from Davis' cheap Hav-A-Tampa cigars.

"I like that one," Davis says.

"No," Dixon says, "it's turned the wrong way."

They motor on, scanning the sky.

A onetime captain in the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department, Davis considers himself an expert in scam artists and nut cases. So his radar went up in January when he got the call from a woman in London.She said she was from the Open Minds Forum, an Internet group specializing in "UFOlogy." She said she represented people who were interested in the drone and wanted to contact Raji and others who claimed in Web postings to have seen the craft. There was the guy in Bakersfield who called himself Chad. There was the hiker and the bicyclist, both from the San Jose area. Nobody used last names. So far, nobody could be found.

Before calling Davis, the Open Minds group had e-mailed Raji. He told them he snapped the picture from his fiancee's parents' home. They hoped to ask more questions, but he suddenly closed his e-mail account. They spent months looking for him before deciding to hire a professional.

Find the power pole in the photo, the woman told Davis, and you'll find the house. And Raji.
Oh, and one more thing: She didn't want to be identified.

Davis doesn't believe in UFOs, but he said that "she seemed like a logical person who wanted answers." Besides, he loves the challenge of working cold cases. And the nice hourly pay. So he started nosing around.

He thought the thing in the pictures looked far too intricate and sophisticated to be the work of some bored teenager using Photoshop. So what was it?

He went to the Internet, trawling for witnesses.

Some who said they saw the craft likened it to a dragonfly or an upside-down egg beater. They described it variously as an exploratory craft dispatched by a mother ship and a top-secret government project.

But in chat rooms, Davis also found plenty of drone doubters, who made comments such as "Looks like a new kind of torque wrench" and "Did you folks get a picture or two of the crop circles?"

In one exchange, when someone asked about the meaning of the writing on one of the craft's arms, the snide responses flooded in: "Made in China." "Martians for Obama."

Word of Davis' case quickly spread among his ex-cop cronies. T.K. had gone galactic, they joked at their weekly drinking sessions. He was seeing little green men. Davis let them laugh, just as they had when he'd taken a night class in meteorology and spent weeks chasing tornadoes in the Midwest.

"I'm not chasing flying saucers," he said. "I'm knocking on doors, looking for people, just like I've always done."

Then he got a call from Dixon, a fellow retiree he'd known since the two worked on a 1970s narcotics task force. Dixon, also a private eye, had heard about the case on the golf course. He wanted in. "I'm your man," he said. "I can find that pole." When Davis said yes, Dixon went out and bought a book about Roswell, N.M., the site of a notorious UFO sighting in 1947.

The pair devised a strategy: Don't buy into any far-fetched "Star Wars" theories. And don't admit the case has anything to do with possible alien spacecraft. If you start talking about flying saucers, Davis warned, people will start closing doors.

"We were working for people who didn't want to be identified," Davis said, "looking for people who didn't want to be found."

Dixon quickly became an expert on utility poles.

Like fingerprints, he says, each pole is different. Some carry only telephone wires. Others also have cable-TV hookups. Most, but not all, have short rods for climbing. He visited the power company with one photo -- with the drone carefully edited out. He said he was working an auto accident. Could they tell him where the pole was?

No luck.

He then visited the website of the Mutual UFO Network, dedicated to extraordinary sightings, where a man named Isaac claimed that strange craft resembling the one Dixon and Davis were investigating were part of a U.S. government project. Isaac said he knew this because he worked for a top-secret government program in Palo Alto in the 1980s, devising commercial technology from extraterrestrial artifacts confiscated by U.S. scientists.

Isaac wrote that he worked five stories below ground. Dixon consulted fire officials, who keep records of building heights and depths, but could find no record of such a place.

Running into such dead ends, Davis took a chance and began mentioning the real reason for his search.

Sometimes, it actually seemed to help.

"They'd call it baloney and then admit, well, maybe they had seen something funny one night in their lives," he said. "Everybody's in the closet."

One person said she'd seen the drone in Sequoia National Forest. "It was broad daylight. I was sober," she said. "I'm not known for seeing things." Dixon had his doubts, because she couldn't even recall what day it happened.

Before hiring Davis, the woman from the Open Mind Forum called Capitola police to report the photo and request an investigation. Chief Richard Ehle considered the whole matter a farce, but assigned a detective to it just in case.

Sgt. Mark Gonzales found nothing. "We're a small beach town, and residents report everything from cat feces on lawns to sick seagulls," he said. "If someone saw something, I'd know about it."
But he said he wouldn't immediately close the case. "I keep an open mind," he said.

So do Davis and Dixon. They recently uncovered some new leads. At a party, Davis mentioned the drone to a friend. "I thought he would have thrown me out of the room." Instead, the man offered a theory about the location of Isaac's secret Palo Alto laboratory.

I dont know what you mean by " deal "with this and as for " long hours", as We All have spent long hours and nights, with no pay on this across the board and across the country. If Linda were involved extensively in this at all, she would have been the initiator, not a silent partner. If this was in planning for months, then all the omrt stuff to the rest of the forum was a "necessary" front? interesting.
"dealing works 2 ways, and I hope again,does work out, for if not, you lost a lot of money, and the investigators, being ex-police officers, as I myself am ( graduated from the academy with honors, not easy to do., (you would never know it from here though). Yes they will tell you whether or not..there was intimidation or "foul" play as you all have suggested as the main reason for the absence of all 16 or 17 witnesses, not including the families even. As you imply you may be working with linda, (its a safe bet we have known that for for a some time) .So we can expect both of you release the Ty Pix and all the othe details...ie Full disclosure. But for me the 12 hard mailed typix will be fine.

But now, I think it a fair question also ,What will the script be for the rest of us if you do NOT get anything ? will you share that now?
will it be a "that this does not disprove anything!, they are in witness protection or fort levenworth detained?, or perhaps a "they could have" when actually we all know " they should have"? will you all including "MsLinda, admit you were took? .

as for me .if proven real, I would be joyous, if false, there are thousands of other cases, Im not a debunker as you would like to paint me, I just don't tolerate Liars, especially when they are are part of the media. Call it a character flaw in all of us here and some at your forum too. I just dont hide my feelings in that regard. You know that very very well.

As we tried to tell you ages ago and many times.. OMRT and DRT are not the same.. We were put into OMRT a long while after we started working on this ourselves. How could you doubt what we are saying here...?

You can not prove a negative, but you can prove a positive.. and on that basis LMH and all of us are working hard. She has no lead in this, only the best intentions within her limits of confidenciality and professionalism, of which she has abundant supply. RESPECT is key here for us as well as LMH and our PI's. We can not provide any information that is work in progress, just know that we don't lie. And if anything should happen to us as members we have back up support, so no information is lost. That's all I can say at the moment. I hope you can respect that.

lol, well the stuff I've experience in my life, I don't know what is "fiction" and what isn't, I never seen this before, first time! Can you explain in short point how this came to be a hoax? Lot of pages to go through

I am anxious everyone else, excited, at the prospect they might be found. I do not have to prove anything, I did not fly over Big Basin looking "down" flashing myself at a group of bicyclers, like on chase scene in the movie ET. Despite the requests for pictures ,which you now imply Linda has shown or provided you ,when you say she did "everything" possible, Did it include that? If she did, then you fibbed to us as we asked you for them.If she didnt, then she has not done everything possible, which is it.You wish us to RESPECT that? and the issue is not merely with the quantity of evidence, Tomiuk but the quality. The issues is facts, not UFO. You prove, you have the burden.
It should be obvious we all here at ATS have been generous and maintain an open ear.
I have said enough and wished you a sincere good luck and you should not be afraid of what we say here, because if you walk with truth, you stay in truth. No lie or disparagement from any quarter can change that.

Please freight, dont mix the UFO phenomenon and this case as proof there are or are not ufos. I too have experienced, In fact just about all of us have in here..but. over 90 percent of these are explainable, and then there is the other 10.so that does not mean very 'digital shot' that comes in wiped of its exif data means real UFO, or I suggest you take a job with the Wlmart 24 hour Photo processing center to keep up if you do
The point we came to an "epiphany"was when Tom Cruise jumped on the Sofa on Oprah winfrey, when Dopefish, and littlele prince came on the stage in the LAP, when the game twister diiscovered by woy of OMF on the LAP, when Oil rig parts, dicovered on the LAP anti grav by Razmus, etc. When Witnesses disappear, at onset, when LMH promotes story, then starts cancelling prg and coverage, and withholds photos,I already directed you there to comments on My profile (My profile not yours). Just click on my name on my avatar, and start scrolling.Deny those, I cant help you, You have created a thread for that already I see, and that would be the appropriate and actually fresh place to start,I assume, to discuss is it real or fake, we discuss in here the possible causes. We are tracking the people and the real world right now because it was born in the real world, from somebodies imagination. Even Isaac as he said didnt know what one looked like, just the lettering he said. Why should we make it real for him. If you hauled him into court..he would have to say..I only saw my letters on them, I really dont know if that was them for real. Not exactly reliable. Ifyou substitute a toaster with same letters, he would have admit the same thing..no different.

I am glad you liked the loin part I forgot to put a smiley on it. I ran across the phrase in the bible or some book..and I thought it was funny too.
Part of answering why all this if it wasnt real is the same as why many others who have been caught , greed,fame, and fortune, even a prank.
Whats different here is LMHs entrenchment, and c2cs in fact. If I were a true hardened cynic I would say they were duplicitous, based on declining business, especially as they report and interview in a little circle, along with whitley, who knows. Of the three, whitley is the most brilliant. He dreamed one. case closed as far as he is concerned.
it was the only time they had a real 2nd and 3rd quarter year above others. after that it went down down down. motivations tomi are there for the taking.
Had she done what she was supposed to do, and release what I have mentioned a thousand times..this may well have been over by now.
Even now she hopes to drum it up, after burying it on her site. So far all is talk. AS a producer herself she has the people to analyze and even create the effect as you would find in lets say matrix, or another production she did with History channel, or even early years.
I have put in my commentary already the things that shifted my opinion only on this case. There are others Iam interested..and there are more coming..this is just a start .its a cycle..dig it ? I am interested in finding who did it., not is it real. I have already viewed hundreds of better looking uav from palm size to flying refrigerators..Those are quite real and evolving and deadly.
Exposure will spread the meme but hopefully, will increase a lot more pointed questions than we have been able to ask. Reading Admins own notice of standards for discussion, and proof, a finding of hoax is a reasonable conclusion given everything that has gone by, including attempts to link the caret to unrelated events or pictures. In his post demanding 100% anything is unreasonable for either side.So unless something better comes along, televising the issue with no analysis, is just a "its being looked into" and " look who's on TV, it must be real!" and that is no substitute for proof, but may help us all get answers down the road.

I believe you have stated that several times, what we need here Freight is proof, not a cheering section or peanut gallery, as there are other places for that, or its real because you say its real . you will get nowhere in life like that ,unless your talking about a religious belief, and this is not the forum for that. It never became a hoax, freight, since it always WAS.

It is funny to read, that some old detectives are busy with searching the power pole and I guess Raj - or Raji, as he is called now - is either laughing as much as I am or he is afraid, that those detectives really could find his - surely beautiful - popo.

Just give the OMRT the time to find nothing. But as I learned, finding nothing is proof to belief.

When you are an old grandpa you probably will tell your grandchildren: Once there was a time, when the drones were visible...

And they will tell their grandchildren: Once upon a time...

So everything will be okay again in a few generations.
