NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg leaves GOP: Possible 08 Presidential Bid?

news.yahoo.com

NEW YORK - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Tuesday switched his party status from Republican to unaffiliated, a stunning move certain to be seen as a prelude to an independent presidential bid that would upend the 2008 race.

The billionaire former CEO, who was a lifelong Democrat before he switched to the GOP for his first mayoral run, said the change in voter registration does not mean he is running for president.

For those counting thats now the second switch for Bloomberg. he was a lifelong Democrat who switched to the GOP for the mayoral race and now he is "un-affiliated". It would be interesting to see how he fares in a presidential bid. many people are fed up and what seemed like a Democratic cakewalk has now turned into anybodies race. An independant could appeal to those voters fed up much like the nerve Ross Perot tapped in his bid.

If he did enter the race for President it would take votes away from Rudy. That doesn't make much sense to me, but then again maybe he is on Hillary's payroll.

Imagine...

Hillary a NY Senator
vs. Guilianni a former NYC Mayor
vs. Bloomberg current NYC Mayor

Well you beat me to it. Fred T

It would be interesting... he is a successful business man... unlike our much tauted MBA president. And he is definitely more affable and desirable than Rudy. Personally I am in favor of scraping our present system and embracing a parliamentary system with multiple parties requiring coalitions, so him running as an independent would interest me (as would Ron Paul)...but only if either actually have a chance of winning.

The only thing Bloomberg has going for him is his money, imo. I doubt he would have much voter appeal beyond NYC. I don't see him having the same effect that Perot did.

I don't know.... there is a deep unease in the country after 7 years of bushism; the Democrats are in as much a quagmire as Iraq, maybe worse sense an exit strategy can be worked out for Iraq. For the Democrats; the only thing that might save them is a purge of all things DLC and its allies and return to its roots. Unfortunately Hillary typlifies the DLC and all that is wrong with the Dems. So...maybe, just maybe a third party candidate finally has a chance.
