Muslim group assists Canadian Vets

Here's a good news story that's evolved out of a tale of government bureaucracy. The local veteran's association, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 322 in Ajax, Ontario, was apparently late in submitting a request for its annual $1000 grant towards Canada Day celebrations. By the looks of things, the govenment changed the deadlines and this volunteer organisation was left out in the cold. Even appeals to the Minister in charge went unheeded.


After the local Member of Parliament, opposition MP Mark Holland, made a fuss, a number of folks stepped up with donations for the Legion. Tops among them was $1000 from the Mississauga Muslim Community Centre. With all of the xenophobia and anti-Islamic rhetoric going on these days, it's great to see the Muslim community take ownership of this situation as one of their own concerns. The story is pretty much buried by the mainstream media, but it's one that deserves some play.

Canada Day is a pretty big deal around these parts, and it's way past petty to jerk our vets around for a lousy grand to assist our neighbourhood in celebration.

Next time I pass a mosque, I'm going to recall their gesture with gratitude. And when the local Conservative candidate next comes to my door, I'm going to remind him how his government sloughed off our vets.

Gestures like that will go a LONG way to helping the muslium image in the WEST.

I fear, it will in the same manner, make them enemies of all the radical musliums.

I guess it was time to make a stand-finally- and they choose to be good citizens and members of their country.

I can only hope this will be seen and followed by more.

please elaberate? i would really like to know how muslim who look out for their comunity as taught by the quran is going to make them a target?

Bodrul, you're missing the point. The radical fundamentalist Muslims have no use for Western nations period. Radical Islam certainly isn't going to applaud this Islamic group for helping Westerners.

and i wont argue that,

I think any religion is getting demonized if they don't parallel the view of those who say they have 'vision'....and I think anyone reading this knows who 'they' are

I think it's preposterous to hit up vets for mandatory donations. Haven't they given enough already?!?
