[my question is, it it abandoned?
Far from being abandoned, Area 51 is as active as ever, and, in fact, there are more new buildings than a couple of years ago. The estimate is still
the same, anywhere from 1200 to 1800 defense contractors at work in various shifts in various compartmentalized projects. The number of vehicles at
the E.G. & G. Terminal at McCarren in Las Vegas has not lessened. I would even say that Area 51 has somewhat expanded in the past 6 months or so:
BREAKING NEWS: June 11, 2007
A huge new hangar is under construction at Area 51 !!
Here is an item of interest for the public, since our hard-earned tax dollars are involved and, hopefully, at work at the base:
A huge new hangar is under construction at Area 51 - June 11, 2007

The photo was taken on June 10, 2007 from Tikaboo Peak.
A huge new hangar is currently under construction at Area 51. It is about 1.5 to 2 times the size of Hangar 18, which was the largest hangar at Area
51 until now. The new hangar is located SE of the South Ramp, near the north end of Rwy 12/30. The sides have not been finished, but a large hangar
door opening can be seen on the side facing the flight line. A large mound of dirt blocks the view at the lower part of the hangar from Tikaboo. This
may be related to the construction, or to keep curious hikers from seeing the construction area. The estimated size is 200 ft x 500 ft and 100 feet
tall.
Also, for those of you who may not have kept up with the recent developments at Area 51, just last year a tall structure was erected near the DYCOMMS
and Quick Kill radar sites (next to the Radar Cross Section site):

By the way, is Area 51 really called Area 51 ? No, not any more. The name Area 51 originated from old maps of the Nevada Test Site from the 1950's.
On these maps, the land around Groom Lake was marked as Area 51. The term was officially used from the 1960's until the late 1980's, during the time
when the base was mostly controlled by the DoD and CIA.
After the Air Force took over in the late 1980's, the name was changed to Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3, or, for short, AFFTC Det. 3.
This is still the official designation of the Groom Lake base.
However, Area 51 is still commonly used to refer to the base.
What Area 51 is about (at the present moment, June, 2007) can be seen at:
