Patent sought on 'synthetic life'

Scientists working to build a life form from scratch have applied to patent the broad method they plan to use to create their "synthetic organism".

Why on earth do we need a "synthetic organism"? And, isn't it a little odd to have the creation of life patented? I just find this to be a stretch. Am I the only one who thinks this scientist has a bit of a "God" complex? Wild.

I think hes trying to protect his investments

There will be a lot of money in that if they are successful can you imagine once they create the organism and the government mandates that all factories in the US producing these harmful emmissions must have these organisms im place to "eat/abosrb" these pollutantants? They will be very very filthy rich scientists. And with this patent they will be the only ones making money off this.
