John from Cincinnati

It was on after the Sopranos finale last night. Rather than bestir myself three feet to reach the remote, I ended up watching it. Cleaning up after two kids vomiting from stomach viruses has that effect on people.

I was prepared to hate it. Mainly because the trailers gave me the impression it was going to be religion oriented. But then, I think Big Love is great TV despite its religious roots.

I ended up being intrigued by it. I didn't expect it to be about a family of surfers, and I certainly didn't expect it to be set in the area I grew up, San Diego County, specifically Imperial Beach (when I was born that's where we lived, though we later moved to Chula Vista).

I do admit that the John character reminds me of a cross between Rain Man and Max Headroom.

I saw enough of it that I will probably watch again next week, if only to try to figure out just what the hell HBO thinks it's doing this time.

Did anyone else watch it? Thoughts, impressions, predictions?

Am I the only person who watched this last night?

Tell me I didn't hallucinate it.

No, I couldn't have, HBO has it up on their site.

Unless John from Cincinnati was some sort of message aimed only at ME.

It's only on MY computer.

Yeah, that's it.

i watched it, i sat through the whole thing. A ton of people i know turned it off mid episode. I have no idea what the show is about.. but i intend on giving it 2 more episodes. I dont think the show will last unless the people who actually sit though it make a big buzz out of it.

I watched it. they made such a big deal about the show and the reviews were good so there must be more coming in the next couple of episodes. otherwise, it's another big love. good idea, borning show.

I'm intrigued enough to watch next episode.
I have to know why Surfer dad floats 2 inches off the ground, occasionally.

and the kid who brought the bird back to life. what's up with that? One of the reviews I read said something about a miracle in the second episode.

All righty then. Who else forgot to watch this on Sunday night?

I didn't remember it until it came on after Big Love last night. I watched it, but I'm still thinking "meh."

If I remember to watch it THIS Sunday, it will be the last time unless it starts moving along. I am leaning more towards not liking than being intrigued.

The possible religious angle is a bit too much for me to swallow, and the toilet scene I could have done without.

It's trying too hard and not getting anywhere is my feeling after the second episode.

Anyone else watch? Or am I the only sucker left on the board?

I watched it last night. I thought I had it set to tape, sat down and watched entourage and then wanted to watch John and it was not recorded. Fortunately it was on at the time so I sat thru it.

It's confusing and strange and yet enjoyable in that the story lines are new and different. I have yet to figure out who Al Bundy is in relation to the Yost clan but I guess we'll learn soon enough.

I like it. Can't explain why tho.

My guess is that he's the father of the woman who Butchie had the kid by.

But he seems to have Alzheimer's or something. it's hard for me to get serious about the show because I'm so used to seeing him with his hands down his pants.

yeah, it's tough seeing him in anything now but he's not bad on the show. Not alzheimers by the way. He's nutty in another way.

I watche both episodes (just saw this thread) and I liked it a lot. i think the character building is just as great as it was in Deadwood (anothe David Milch show) . In fact there were 3 actors in there from Deadwood.

Anyone know them?

Anyway, John from Cincinatti or (hint, hint) J.C. is like and expanding mystery so I like it. It could go faster, but like any book...I'm enjoying the character building.

I like how John repeats things and people don't see to get it sometimes or how he has whatever they want in his pockets. Butchie isn't having drug withdrawls, the bird, the floating, and now Shawnie waking.

I'll keep watching.

That's funny TB, small world, isn't it?

My mom and dad rented an apartment right on the beach proper when I was born. There's a newborn pic of my dad holding me on the couch and you can see the beach out the window behind him.

In high school we used to go down there to have bonfires and hunt grunion. Never saw any grunion, but had a great time.

Of course, the Tijuana brown water always made swimming an exercise in hoping not to get a skin problem.

No, I went to Chula Vista Jr and Sr High. We moved off IB when I was little, when my folks broke up. But even when I lived in CV, we'd always go back to IB to have our beach fun.

I haven't been to IB in over 20 years. Probably wouldn't even recognize it now.

I missed the 2nd episode!
Or, by the time I realized it was on, there were just a few minutes left in the show.
I'll have to catch the replay.
Did the young Yost kid break his neck?

How I missed your reply spacedoubt, I dunno. My apologies.

If you still haven't seen episode 2, yes, Sean's neck was broken, and he had just about zero brain function. Only alive because of machinery.

So .... who saw episode 3?

They intrigued me just enough to watch next week, but only because I have many questions now.

What's with the lawyer, the hotel owner and the handyman? Are they supposed to be some kind of left-handed Three Wise Men?

What's with the heroin dealer and his underling? Is Mitch going to go after Luke Perry's girlfriend? Or spy, or whatever she is?

Is Luke Perry supposed to be Judas? Have we actually counted how many characters there are? Anywhere near 12 plus Sean?

Am I making too much of this religion angle?

I still don't know if I like it or not. But I'll give it one more go.
