Very cool. I had a feeling it was only a matter of time before this disclosure would be made. Some of the pics I've seen of mars have been quite baffling and amazing. Hopefully, microbes will be the next disclosure.

Not trying to rain on the parade, but what I see is a picture of water, and ground. That's all. How do we know this is of mars and not just outside of Flagstaff?

What isn't surprising to me is that NASA isn't the one making this announcement. To me it's another example of their concerted efforts over the years to downplay the possibility of life on mars. The absence of a biological lab aboard any probe since the Viking lander 30 years ago is pretty telling in terms of their priorities.

Did you read the article?

This photo was taken by one of the Rovers, Opportunity (more than two years ago, if I am correct in my calculations), and it stayed on that area for some days (Sols).

PS: that image is not a true colour image, is made with Infra-Red, Green and Ultra-Violet, not Red, Green and Blue.
And I still think that does not look like water.

The top of the photo looks a little to square, where is that water coming from??

If it is a pic from mars, this is pretty wierd!!

has anyone shown any proof that this is from mars yet??

The water "squares" off in almost all areas, which water doesnt do . .it looks really fake to me. Not buying it at all. . .

does not look like water to me, too.
but if its water - hurray! we have water on mars.

I was going to say that surely water on Mars would reflect the colour of the sky which is not blue. The I saw the post that this was an infra red photo.

What is needed is a mass spectrometry analysis of the puddle. Why has this not happened ?

That is the next question I suppose is why has this not gone further ?
Why did Nasa not announce it ?

If a Rover took the pic then why didnt they stick there drill in it? Or drive over it or something.

I thought mars was a real cold place wouldnt it be frozen, and if its liquid how does it just sit there without evaporating. Is it really possible for mars to have a liquid pond or puddle of water?

Interesting...It does kinda look like water, but it seems it should be more reflective. I'm not going to be holding my breath waiting for them to do the 'simple test' though.

It's cool. but I think it is very unlikely that they are right about this. OTOH, I could believe ice could episodically appear at the surface.

It is a testable hypothesis, but it's too late to test it. Opportunity isn't going back to Erebus.

All yer questions, comments and so forth will be in better light and understanding in this forum that already talks about it.

OK...so here goes.

Zorgon, RikRiley, Undo, and Bluebird are much more adept at this discussion than myself. Hopefully one of them will swing by here (or you will swing by this thread to see an in depth discussion: www.abovetopsecret.com...)

this is not the only sign of water. Where is the visible water? that is a good question. Obviously, one possibility would be in the soil. If this is true, then that would explain the soggy tracks behind the lander.

No, mars is not a frozen wasteland. it is alive, with plant life confirmed, and obvious signs of ancient habitation. The temperature there can range up to 80 degrees...not bad, even for Florida.

Pictures of proof of water (copied from the other, aforementioned, thread):

Lakes:

Why would they release the photo that started this thread, but not this one?:

What died next to this pond?:

More muddy tracks:

Occasionally the ice in the soil melts a little more and runs downhill (like water does):

Water on Mars is nothing new. Go figure.

Most of those pictures and the animated gif of the "Muddy Tracks" look more like a type of sand that is called 'Bulldust' here in Australia, than muddy tracks. Basically it is extremely fine red sand particles and is quite common in the deserts here.

I've never heard of such a confirmation of plant life. I just googled for it, and all I got were conspiracy forums/newsletters saying maybe there once was.

I do believe that life will be found to exist or have existed on Mars, but I've yet to see any proof/announcement yet.
