Bush Surgeon General pick faces bruising confirmation battle over homophobia

rawstory.com

In 1991, Holsinger wrote a paper on "Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality" for the United Methodist Church, in which he argued that homosexuality is unnatural and unhealthy.

Here we have yet another "christian" friend of Bush who is exposed as a homophobe. He has been nominated for the position of Surgeon General, a position where he is to influence public health policy. Despite all the pressing health issues in the US, he seems strangely preoccupied with the male rectum to the point of writing a long paper advising his church congregation on the matter; it is largely devoted to dicussion how, why, and what objects can be inserted into the rectum. Bizarre! Where is Dr. Koop when we need him? I hope this pathetic excuse for a doctor is sent packing soon. link to his paper is above at the pam spaulding site.

Well you do know that alot of people that speak out so fiercely against gays tend to be homosexual themselves.

But yeah here is a case where is personal bias may affect his job..I'm not really sure how yet but I'm sure there will be a way for him to get his agenda across.

In order of importance, I would submit the following list of public health problems Dr. Holsinger should have been focused on before his obsession with the male rectum:
1. Coronary Artery Disease
2. Obesity
3. Diabetes
4. Cancer
5. AIDS
6. Alcoholism
7. Depression/Stress
8. Child Abuse
9. Emphysema
10. Smoking/Nicotine Addiction
11. Crack Cocaine Addiction
12. Heroin Addiction
13. Amphetamine Addiction
14. Malnutrition
15. Autism
16. Environmental Pollution
17. Asthma
18. Abortion Availability
19. Stem Cell Research
20. Alzheimers Disease
etc, etc, etc...
IMHO, diseases affecting the male rectum might rank somewhere around 9,999

Well, well, well, I can not wait to see what agenda he may have to give the nation and the male part of the population in regards to the "rectum"

Be aware that your rectum may get you in trouble with the new Pick for Surgeon General.

I am glad no part of the female genitalia is in his agenda.

It may just be me here who subscribes to this view but honestly... In this day and age when homosexuality at least on paper law is recognized and to be honest everyone is alot more educated and less ignorant about it to be informed to make there own judgement, So are people really that bothered about what homophobes think about how people live there lives?

It's tit for tat in the media 'OH MY GOD HE'S A HOMOSEXUAL' or 'OH MY GOSH HE'S A HOMOPHOBE' -There is no winning as both sides hurt each other in a sense and keep the mass in a state of ignorance in all honesty.

It's annoying to constantly see 'BIG BAD HOMOPHOBES' being outed for the blood hungry masses talk about oppression of opinion or what!!!

It's exacatly what the gay rights movement have been fighting for all these years and suddenly when they're recognized it's turned around the shoe is on the other foot? :Sarcasm: Talk about learning from example and showing tolerance :Sarcasm:

Who's making the victim of people now? Neither side wins unless this way it just causes more damage this is a prime example look the dude is 'Ancient' in all honesty he's from a different era than most of us he has had DECADES of social programming and educational and parental maxims and ideals different from todays maybe it's hard for the guy to change his opinion you know not everyone is the same and unfortunely Homophobia will exist for the forseeable future you can't just outright wipe these things out like a disease or something...

This isn't ethnic cleansing or religion oppression so honestly don't let these people bother you otherwise you damage the hard work that has been achieved for gays and lower yourself to there level these people are insecure you anger them only because they see themselves as inferior to you by being entrapped in a closed mind and not being able to live or accept how others choose to live there lives.

Peace

He has a right to hold whatever opinions he wants, however he shouldn't be Surgeon General, any more than you'd appoint a Klansman as Attorney General. Nobody's talking about jailing the guy for his opinion, just that he's not a good choice for the nations highest health official...

Exactly, I agree with you, he had the right to his own opinions, but clearly he has abuse his own credentials to push his own version of what he thinks is right and wrong about the subject of homosexuality.

That is wrong, plain simple wrong.

If you check out the link on my last post, it goes over his "paper" on gay sex in detail and checks his sources. It turns out that he totally misquoted athem and took his facts out of context. I think the real issue is not that he personally is homophobic, but rather that he misuses scientific data and trys to fit it to support his own prejudices. This is a serious flaw which disqualifies him for the post of surgeon general. In that role, one must make decisions based on what the data show, not based on one's own beliefs. There is too much of that in the GWB administration already and it is causing havoc in the world. For your convenience, see this article:
