Japanese Robot Dances To iPod Music

A new Japanese robot twists and rolls to iPod tunes in an intricate dance based on complex mathematics, a technology developers said will one day enable robots to move about spontaneously instead of following preprogrammed motions.

At a demonstration in Tokyo on Thursday, the 11-pound Miuro pivoted about on a stage in time to beats of a pop music track. Its dance wasn't preprogrammed, but generated by the robot itself.

That is extremely cool, for a robot to be able to spontaneously create a dance,
rather than just follow a preprogrammed routine.

This is definitely a significant, if not in size, in the very idea of it, in the development of true AI.

Oh cool!!

I'm teaching a robotics course at summer camps this summer and just bought an I-Cat ( www.computergear.com... ) because the kids asked if we could have some music. What better than a programmable display speaker with games included?

Well... that Japanese robot is even cooler, but I don't think I can afford it right now. (Tomorrow, I'm taking my Roomba in to show them. I'm SO geeky and I loooooooove techie toys!)
