You know, being from Illinois, this absolutely disgusts me to the core.

news.yahoo.com...

This woman, and other students, were completely DENIED they're diplomas, because family and friends cheered for her, and she walked across stage.
The school argues it causes too much disturbance.

What the # is wrong with these schools these days?????

I think the action that the school took was perfectly acceptable due to the history of the event. Parents would cheer ridiculously loud even to the point that parents couldn't hear their kids name get called. They also signed a contract before the ceremony saying that they wouldn't cheer until everyone was called and if they didn't abide by that rule they would have their diploma held. They knew the the rules but didn't follow them now they gotta face the consequences...boo hoo!

Well, on the surface this seems that this is a horrible travesty, but after you read though it, it seems that the school had every right to withhold the Diploma, and take away school-after-party-privilages...? So, they signed an agreement not to act like a holligan basicly. It says that there has been a problem at the gradutaion, incudling AirHorns?, hooting and hollering. Is this how the American graduation is now, akin to hip party with people hooting and hollering and pimp walking across the stage, with no reguard for the event, however insignifigent a HS graduation is now.

About a month before the May 27 ceremony, Galesburg High students and their parents had to sign a contract promising to act in dignified way. Violators were warned they could be denied their diplomas and barred from the after-graduation party.

This says it all.

They were warned. They signed an agreement.

Graduation should be dignified.

If you and your folks want to want to act like hyenas, go to a professional wrestling event.

It's about time schools started demanding a modicum of dignity from graduation audiences.

Oh for the love of Pete!!!

What has happened to this world??? When i graduated my whole family was there yelling and screaming and happy for me and my accomplishments.

WTH has happened? Come on, witholding diplomas?????

What they need is a huge law suit from all the parents, that's what they need.

You know, i dont know about this new generation. I think these people were born already programmed with the NWO on their brains.

This is absurd and ridiculous and i wouldnt stand for it.

Shame on those of you who agree with the actions here. You need to get a life, really.
No wonder this world is so screwed up and getting worse.

Really.

Thats so funny, I just busted out laughing. Dang she should bitch slap her parents, what a ho (her mom). I feel bad for her because it wasnt her fault, dang that sucks. If all the other parents did the same thing and she was selectively target then it would be an even bigger deal, but her parents were only the ones. She sholdnt really be punished but her parents should been thrown in guantanomo bay.

In the UK we would of got our results in an envelope.

I can imagine this girl walking out there, with all that riot etc. Fixing a point on the stage with her eyes with such intensity it would look like that laser scene in Gold Finger.

If she (just her - not her entourage) deserved the qualification then it should be hers. Big ass full stop.

Since when did high school students and their parents have to sign a contract?

When I graduated high school no one had to sign a fricken contract. What the hell is wrong with America?

So these schools assume parents and students will cause problems? It seems to me like the school is more concerned about the legal issues at hand then the actual achievements and well being of the students.

So if these people didn't sign the contracts what are the odds they would cause disruptions? When have you ever had to sign a contract to participate in a celebration?

I'm more concerned about the school making people sign forms then the actual withholding of the diploma.

After reading the entire article I can see where the school was coming from previous ceremonies had been disrupted by excessive noise and possible violence from parents. That being said withholding the diploma from the student seems excessive.

I understand wanting some decorum but it is a joyous occasion marking the end of long years of work. We cheered at my daughter's graduation it fact we cheered every kid as they entered the gym during pomp and circumstance; then we cheered every kid during the slide show. Parents, friends and family should choose when and how they cheer but certainly there is nothing wrong with it. The issue here is previous behavior that had passed the bounds of decency for which this young lady is now paying.

First it starts with making people sign letters not to cheer. The NWO is all about wittling away at your rights for seemingly innocuous reasons.

Next thing you know, you're in jail for talking back to school administrators.

Let the horrors of the NWO begin!

i don't know about illinois but don't you have to be 18 years or older for a contract to be legally binding? did her parents sign said contract?

I disagree with the actions that the school took. A student can let her friends and family know that they shouldn't cheer, but ultimately it's out of her/his control.

I think a better policy would be to make an announcement at the graduation/send a letter to parents letting them know the school disapproves of loud, extended clapping, etc. Then if anyone transgresses the policy, that person should be immediately removed. I bet that would be more effective, too.

Another point is that the clapping, etc. is very normal at a graduation ceremony and part of the fun. They should allow time for that at the ceremony.

Since when is it appropriate to hold someone accountable for the actions of *others*????

Good god, no wonder we have lost our minds in this country! :shk:

When I graduated our high school was having minor problems with parents cheering. We did not have a contract but a few parents did yell out and disrupt the ceremony after being asked at the start not to cheer. The speakers even explained why parents should not cheer out of respect for other parents and graduating students. Graduation is a big deal for parents and they want to be able to hear the name of their son or daughter called, but they cannot hear it if parents for the student before their kid are yelling like idiots. This is about common courtesy, something that is severely lacking in America right now. The thing that annoys me most about this is that the people who usually cheer are just people who are trying to buck the system and say FU to the school and they do not seem to have any respect or consideration for other people. If anything maybe this is a valuable lesson to those graduating students – If you go out into the world and act like jackasses there will be consequences.

The parents/family of that child are MORONS... simply put. They knowingly signed a contract stating that if they did what they did, their child's diploma would be taken away... and yet they still did it.

What are they going to sue? That they were tricked into signing that contract? Or that they forgot to be respectful and courteous while blatantly ignoring their LEGAL promise and the possible consequences?

I don't think any of you guys in here that are against what the school did have ever met "ghetto" people before. Anyone that has been around them know how loud and unruly they can be so I'm assuming that these are the kinds of people that were in attendance at the ceremonies.
