The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, otherwise known as DARPA (you know, they created that thing which allows you to read this site -- the internet?), has tasked scientists with the goal of creating a bionic arm that looks, feels ,and works like a real arm by the year 2009.

An interesting find I thought. No pictures but I imagine it will look like this

DARPA is the master when it comes to future tech, they have robotics and even AI in the works. Wait, I'm feeling deja vu, no wait I just got done watching the terminator movie last night.

Thats cool, but I bet they could make this tommorow.

The PWL-5000 is one of the most memorable movie vehicles ever. Used by Ripley in the Aliens movie to fight the Alien Queen.

You think they would have that out already. Cant remember when, but I saw a news report about exo -arms that help lift very heavy weight.

Think I remember something about a fiber that could be formed into something simular to muscle, it would contract when electricity was passed through it - many times the strength of human tissue for simular volume. Think it was intended for fixing people up after accidents. Gonna have a look for it later.

I think the primary reason for this is the Forklift is still way more efficient.

But there is this Logging machine used by some Scandinavian or Nordic country(I am thinking Sweden but I'm not so sure)

Here you go and there are many more already made. No need to wait to see this happen.

While bionic arms and such have gone through a huge transformation the last few years,
and indeed have gotten a great amount better, DARPA has a goal of one that actually looks,
feels and has the fluid motion of a real arm.

We're seeing the biggest advances in humanoid robots coming out of Japan, and it would not surprise me to find that they're soon in the forefront of medical bionics as well. Part of it is due to the difference in their cultural attitudes towards technology and robotics. Robots as members of society is an accepted concept in their country, and in fact they're eager for things like companion robot dogs and cats.

I understand that a teaching hospital near me is developing bionic arms as well and I hope to get a chance to see them and talk with the team this year.

My hubby dearest has just received a new leg (his was amputated above the knee a year ago) which is electronically controlled. Have a look at this site: www.nabtesco.com... and scroll down to "Welfare Business Promotion Department".

thats cool but i bet this technology is already in existence. From what iv heard our technology is way ahead of its time (not our mainstream technology) It wouldnt suprise me if the military already have this top secret shi* which our eyes will never see, not for now anyway...

Heh anyone remember that old game Syndicate? Possible they may eventually be working on a LEONARDO device. Makes me think of that due to the mention in this thread of synthetic fibers for muscles.

I reckon nono tech is the way they'd be going, sort of solid sate microchips formed to any state / function required - whoah that like the terminator 3000! (that fit cyborg bird). Just remember they can allways be defeated with a strong enough magnetic field!

I hope that bionics will be further developed, if only for the sake of amputees... There's a Scottish company that deals with bionics by creating limbs and developing new technology...

Here's the link.

The most impressive thing on that site is the picture of John German opening a can of Pepsi with his bionic hand.

Very very very cool

Just imagine how good these things will be in 20 years time.
