dna taken from babies

There recently was an topic on the news about dna taken from babies to be put on a database to prevent future crime,sounds a bit like the film minority report.i wrote a thread a few months back concerning dna and criminals.is this illegal?

I don't know if it's legal or not. But scary none the less. I do know when my daughter was born 3 years ago they took blood from the umbilical cord but would not tell me why. "Standard procedure" I was told. I found out later it is used for stem cell research.I think I should have been ask permission for this.They would'nt take anything else from my body without asking would they? who gives them the right?
