They're not two countries you'd easily imagine having a diplomatic showdown, but Sweden and the Maldives are facing off against each other – in a virtual world.
The Scandinavian country attracted worldwide attention in January, when it announced that it would become the first country to open an embassy in the online world Second Life.
MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's bitter political wrangling has spread to Second Life with supporters of socialist and conservative parties trying to burn down each others' party offices in the virtual world.
"They have thrown bombs, entered the building with sub-machine guns, lit fires, everything you could imagine," an official from Spain's ruling Socialist Party, using the Second Life moniker Zeros Kuhm, told Reuters.

ABC Island nuked in Second Life
I love the smell of mashed banana in the morning.
Online virtual game world, Second Life, is no stranger to attacks by hackers and trouble-makers. Since its inception in 2003, it's seen more than its fair share of viruses, glitches and, er... flying-penis attacks.
However, yesterday, the madness hit closer to home, when the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's private island in the game was all but wiped off the face of the (virtual) world by an - as yet - unidentified attacker.
Head of technology for ABC innovation, Craig Preston, stated "It looks like we've had some enormous cyber-bomb set off on our site," and that "they've obliterated almost every object on the site."
Tens of thousands of dollars went into creating the ABC's island, which is apparently the third most visited commercial site in Second Life. The island was back in business yesterday, after several hours of maintenance.
