I was just reading over a new article posted on MSN this morning titled, "The top 25 Hoaxes of all time". It was fairly interesting but not spectacular. Most of their "hoaxes" were email scams and crappy photoshopped images. It did get me thinking though. I wonder what my fellow ATS'ers would consider to be the top hoaxes of all time?

So....Let's hear em. You don't have to give 25, (although you could), but just list what you consider to be some of the greatest hoaxes of all time! To keep it fair, let's only list what has been "proven" to be a hoax, not things we "consider" to be a hoax.

Should be interesting....

The Priory of Sion has to be in there somewhere. I mean, for time expended and material written about them alone, they have to rank pretty high.

I'd actually say a lot of people haven't. ATS was how I found out about Titor as well. Man, was that fascinating though.

There's a lot of stuff that's 'hot' on ATS, but in the real world most people haven't heard of it. Like all this 911 stuff, John Lear's theories and things like that.

I think a lot of ATS'ers seem to forget that it's an internet site and think everyone believes in what they believe.

Anyway, sorry for going off-topic.

Another hoax. The BBC's 1957 Swiss spaghetti harvest hoax.

The P-G film

Roswell

Bermuda Triangle

Philadelphia Experiment

Chemtrails

Alien abductions

I would have a hard time keeping the list the 25.

dj, I did a report on the 'Moon Hoax' you're speaking of.......it was a strange tale.

The 'Great dissapointment of 1844', if not an actual hoax, it took in a lot of people.

The 'Aussie Bloke' story of a couple of years ago.

The halloween 'War of the Worlds' broadcast by Orson Wells.

Santa Claus could be considered a 'hoax'......

i'd say the greatest hoax of all time is religion(those that are fear- and shame-based, at least)

what better way to control the masses than by telling them you have to play by the rules or you will burn in eternal hellfire

you know it's full of BS when people can take the "word of God" and totally reconstruct it into a new testament where God is a loving, forgiving entity because you didn't like the scary God that would unleash his unimaginable wrath at the slightest infraction

They funny part is that many, some very informed people still think some of these events are real. Not through any fault of their own, but due to the pervasiveness of some of the successful hoaxes. Its similar to urban legends.

One I like is what I call the "The Write Stuff" urban legend. It gets repeated many times and seems to make sense and to be real, but isnt:

During the space race back in the 1960's, NASA was faced with a major problem. The astronaut needed a pen that would write in the vacuum of space. NASA went to work. At a cost of $1.5 million they developed the "Astronaut Pen". Some of you may remember. It enjoyed minor success on the commercial market.

The Russians were faced with the same dilemma.

They used a pencil.
