Our 'moon' has no name! Why is this so??!!
All other moons in our system all have proper names except for our poor moon. Jupiters moons for instance are all properly named:

1. Io
2. Europa
3. Ganymede
4. Callisto
5. Amalthea
6. Himalia
7. Elara
8. Pasiphae
9. Sinope
10. Lysithea
11. Carme
12. Ananke
13. Leda
14. Thebe
15. Adrastea
16. Metis
17. Callirrhoe
18. Themisto
19. Megaclite
20. Taygete

ok...I digress...But there are 62 total Jupiter moons that are known...!

Anyways, back to our moon, it's akin to naming your dog = "Dog" or your cat = "Cat", come here CAT!

[color=gold]So I propose a NAME THE MOON (our moon) CONTEST!

Let's come up with some interesting names, in any language, that would reflect mankind in some way, and be pronounceable by the majority of people on this planet!

Other languages name for our moon are quite interesting (moreso than the english version), for instance in Spanish moon is "LUNA".

Ok I'm game. I vote Cheesy Sky Object, or CheeSO for short.

Seriously. Our planet is called Earth. I think it's the same principle as every single early tribe of man calling themselves "the People" in their own language. A form of egocentricism perhaps, or maybe just sheer laziness.

I agree the moon is probably no name because it is the first "moon" known to man. But the Earth does not follow correctly, since the Earth is a "planet". The other planets are named.

Another example of this double standard in naming convention is "THE SUN". The sun of course is a star and yet has a proper name of "Sun". There are other stars with proper names that we've assigned...

I propose calling our moon: Energia, for all the Helium -3 there

I believe our sun is actually named "Sol." Which probably means "sun" in some other language.

Also when Earth was named Earth, they didn't know there were such things as planets. It was alternately a square with edges that people could sail off of, a disk on the back of a turtle held up by four elephants, etc.

Earth was all they knew it was. What's under your feet? The earth. Clever guys those ancients.

The list of names of bodies in our solar system in other languages is here.

I propose we call it Luna.

I win, it's official. You'll see it in text books and on maps because of me.

The moon is the moon.

First and foremost the definition of the word "moon" specifically refers to our moon, the natural satellite of the Earth.

Calling bodies that circle around other planets "moons" is meant just as a comparison. They really aren't moons.

Likewise it's wrong to call any other star than our own a sun. The sun is the sun, our sun and the only sun. Everything else is just a star. And no, you don't capitalize it either.

I already told you, the moon is Luna, and the sun is Sol. Earth is Gaia, like in Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

I fail to see how saying the word moon in another language is renaming it from the word moon

here in canada we have the beer store, which was named after a contest from the former brewers retail.

Day Tripper 28
Solantra
Moonshine
Tideal Pool
Wave Maker
Eclipse

Luna, is one of the unofficial names.

But The Moon, with a capital M..Is it's "name".

Like our galaxy..The milky way is it's unofficial title.
But The Galaxy, with a capital G..Is it's technical name.

Luna, is a good one..

the term galaxy is a collection of stars.
Our galaxy is offically the Milky Way

The evolution of words such as moon and sun is definitely rooted in the far past before we had a scientific knowledge of what they were. However galaxy is not. The milky way originally just referred to the swash of dense stars across the sky which we now recognize as the plane of our galaxy. The whole idea of galaxies is a recent one, and the name "Milky Way" has truly been bestowed as proper name of our own galaxy/

I know people say "Moon" or "Sun" are proper words, but that's really changing the English language (which is fine, languages are always evolving), but to be technical these words should never be capitalized and always refer to our sun and our moon solely.

wow, thats not what I was taught in English class
a proper noun needs a capital
hence Moon and Sun and Earth

My point was those words are not proper nouns. They are simply regular words that refer to unique objects.

Here is a link to "ask an astronomer"

Moon, no name?

Notice that I capitalize them, because when used as names, they are proper nouns. This also helps us distinguish between the planet Earth and earth (meaning soil), between the Earth's Moon and moon (meaning the natural satellite of a planet), and between our Solar System and any other solar systems (since any system containing a star and a planet or a planet-forming disk can be called a solar system.)

It's also interesting to note that most astronomers do not call our galaxy the Milky Way in technical writing--they call it the Galaxy.

but, because of reasons you mentioned DJ, the evolution of the terminology, may still be open for discussion. But there are some scientific agreements made, so that everyone is on the same page.

I think we should call our moon...Dude..

Full Dude, quarter Dude, New Dude..

Theres a bad Dude, on the Rise...!
