Seriously, Souljah, excellent topic. I got to use that new "flag the stars" thingy.

5 Star Rating.

So that... is Denying Ignorance now?
That's a post that's worthwhile. That'll change minds.

Yeah of course it's not a popularity contest.

Odium, that one puzzled me too.....

As well as this.......

I have a few stars now, but so far I've not found any of my posts that have a 'filled in' blue star.....so how did I get any yellow stars?? ( SO wouldn't hand out pity stars, surely?? )

And sometimes when I click a blue star on someone's post, nothing happens. The blue star doesn't fill in, the yellow ones are unchanged.... ?

It's all averages, so if it's a post that has had several people voting on it, the likelihood that your one vote would move the star quantity is reduced. If a post is ranked 4 stars but has had only one person rating it, your rating it a 2 would move it to 3. If it's already been rated 15 or 20 times, your single rating won't move the value, probably.

You have yellow stars because over the course of all the posts you've made, your average rating is 3 stars. If you've only had one post rated, and it was rated "3", there you go.

I'm confident this'll get tweaked. At this point, there doesn't seem to be any statistical effect from posts with -0- stars. And I'd hate to be the guy that had to build that into the equation. You'd have to account for things like at what chronological point do you start allowing posts rated -0- to effect the rating? Since you can go back virtually to the beginning to rate posts, do you allow ratings (assuming anyone goes back that far to rate posts) from that far back to affect the average?

No matter what you decide, you're going to tick off a slew of people. But I ain't gonna be one of 'em.

Ha ha, that was real funny the way you said that man.

People don't let the lust of the stars get to you ha ha...

Anyways,

I have noticed that some people vote their own posts 5 stars. It's quite obvious because all their 1 liners are 5 stars...

Why don't you guys make it so that people can't vote their own posts?

Or is it already like that and the 1 liners were worth 5 stars? i doubt it.

Edit: Now that i found out that you can't rate your own posts by reading this whole thread....

I don't know why people would rate 5 stars for 1 liners...

Well, i think i will rather abstract my self from the whole star system all together.

No! You can't do that! Or else you'll be having only 5-star Generals on ATS!!

Intellectual bankruptcy! Or they're all in the same meatpack! What are friends for, eh?

A darn good idea!

Cheers!

I didn't think we could rate our own posts.

OK, so heres a guy, registered in Nov 2006, who has the following to his credit:

ATS points - 173
BTS - 3
PTS - 2
Threads Started - 4
Total replies - 23
Applauds - 0
Flags - 0

Not one of his threads have been flagged or any blue stars clicked. No stars for any replies too.

SO HOW THE DEVIL IS HE A 5-STAR GENERAL???

Can anyone fathom the logic or the mathematics involved? There's something really wonky in the system! But hey! What do I know?

Cheers!

P.S. Anyone wanting to know who this guy is just U2U me.

So you mean to tell me you looked at ALL of his/her posts and didnt overlook that ONE that may have been rated 5 stars?
BTW what was the purpose of that? I'm not saying you didnt prove your point...I dont know who this person is..I dont want to know (better things to do with my time) But thats not something you do unless you are trying to prove someone DOESNT deserve something...
I'm still trying to figure out which of my posts have been starred and while doing so I found that if you click the button that shows you a threadof all your posts none of the stars show up. You have to go to each and every one of the threads that has a post in order to figure out which ones recieved a certian amount of stars..I hope that made sense. That may be your problem.

Yeah somewhat!

I'm not bothered about stars per se. What I'm trying to figure out is the methodology.

Let's say 'A' has actively participated in 100 discussions over a period of 3 months, and has received a uniform 4 stars for his contributions in each thread he has participated in. So his average is 4.

Now take a newbie, 'B', who has participated in just one discussion over a period of a couple of days for which he has received 5 stars (maybe from his 'buddy'). His average is 5 for that one discussion. So what's the rationale? Or am I missing out something here?

And this discussion is basically to pluck out the warts that may be inherrent in any newly introduced system. The concept is good, but the wrinkles need to be ironed out.

Cheers!

I understand and agree with what you are saying. The length of time a person has been active on this baord can either inflate or deflate their average rating. Most members who have made numerous posts wont have 5 or even 4 stars just because they may have had multiple posts rated various stars. Anyways I think the ATS Admin will work hard to either 1) iron out the wrinkles 2) abondon the star system all together or 3)Come up with a new system

But for now I'm fine with the system (at least I was until someone lowered my star average
)

I started a thread on what members think of the ATS STARS system. There are some good suggestions for added features and improvements.

Heres the thread link:

What does everyone think of the new stars ★★★★★ system?

Well after having the stars around for a few days I got to the conclusion that personaly I really don't like it.

But that is just my opinion, it looks childish, no ofense to the person that decided that it would be a good idea.

Why it looks childish to me . . . because it reminds me the littler starts that teachers give to grade school students to show approval for their efforts.

By the time they finish elemetary school the stars are gone.

BTW I am just been honest.

And guess what that is one of the problems I got with the start here in ATS.

Well I worked with the school system for 9 years and 6 of those years were in with elementary school children so trust me I will give stars to the "undeserving students" so they could get candy on fridays
se the price was a piece of candy for every star

See what I mean, I felt sorry for the littler kids.

Perhaps a thumbs up icon would be better?

Or something ATScentric...

If you were solely interested in getting your point across and making yourself understood, you wouldn't care how many 'stars' it gets you.

Everyone wants to be validated. You may not care weather someone agrees with you but everyone wants to be understood and have their thoughts recognized. Thats why some people care about stars a bit more than others.

I'm on the fence on the whole rating thing. I remember many years ago when there was a thread rating system. It was abused (thus why it's not around now). I can see this being abused too, even though it's all just positive ratings. I'm sure some people will rate their favorite posters five stars, regardless of the quality of there posts. This makes the rating system completely unbalanced, which is even worse in my opinion, it's all Yin and no Yang.

But i'll wait and see how it all plays out.

Well for one, the rating sys. needs many corrections, one that shoulld be made immed. is a 'speed limit' limiting th amount of ratings that one poster can make to any other poster. This would curtail any disgruntled member from spamming one star ratings to the other non-liked poster...

Why can't we rate posts in the podcast forum?

Is it because those who invest time and energy into creating works to be hosted here are not worthy of recognition?

What gives?
