i can clearly remember during the Cuban missile crisis JFK using ariel photos that were taken from a U2 spyplane to show the world the dangers that were only 90 miles off out coast. That was 40 years ago, (ok so i'm old) there is a report that the reason we went to a level orange is that al queda members were moving out of the mountains with stinger missles .my question is since we could do that back then why are we having such a hard time finding al queda fighters now, seems to me with the advances in technology we should be able to blanket those mountains with not only spy planes but satelites and that it would be no problem to not only stop any movement but with a little work trace the fighters back to their hiding spots and strongholds. does anyone know why this isn't or can't be done?

Cuba is somewhat smaller than the entire middle-east. I think that's why it's harder.

How do you know that they aren't blanketing the region?

I bet that a lot of movement happens when the areas are overcast with bad weather.

Besides, I bet it can be a little difficult to tell the difference between a herdsman moving from pasture to pasure with a load of firewood and a terrorist with an armfull of stingers.

that could be true, but if they have the ability to read a license plate from space it seems they should be able to figure out what people are carrying and doing in a remote, rugged area,

Maybe they're just lazy.

Ballistic missiles require a substantial infrastructure (especially in 1962), trucks, refueling depots, army barracks, etc.

These can be seen from the air.

Al Qaeda isn't going to carry man-portable SAMs out in the open.

They'll be hidden under one of the ten million donkey carts.

The other answer is that quite possibly the USSR and Cuba wanted the missiles to be found, so as to deter the US from invasion. From their point of view, they were successful.

Al Qaeda does not want deterrence. They do not want to improve their geopolitical position. They want to kill us.

quite right and wrong, im afraid. Al Qaeda does not show much of an interest in increasing their influences, however, they do not want to kill us. when they speak of satanists infidels, it doesnt mean us as Americans... it means the CIA who left them to rot and die when the Mujahadeen operation was't going so well.

now if you were supported and then left hanging dry as weather changed, wouldn't that make you say things like that, too?
