A scheduled visit to Canada by the leader of the U.S.-based New Black Panther Party has raised the ire and concern of Jewish groups who say his views are hateful.
Malik Zulu Shabazz has been invited to speak in Toronto today by Black Youth Taking Action, a group attempting to encourage political involvement in the city's black community.
But Jewish groups say Shabazz has established a reputation as an anti-Semite with intolerant views that make him an inappropriate speaker.
"We firmly believe that Malik Zulu Shabazz is the worst possible kind of speaker that one can have to speak to youth or anybody else," said Bernie Farber, chief executive officer of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
"This man has a history ... in which he has spewed a lot of hatred, a lot of intolerance, much of it anti-Semitic, and we're terribly concerned that this person would be focused on as a role model for young people."

Immigration authorities stopped U.S. black extremist Malik Zuliu Shabazz at Pearson airport today, preventing him from leading a rally at Queen’s Park this afternoon and speaking tonight at Ryerson University.
The group that invited him blamed a Jewish conspiracy.
“What is to blame is the power of the Jewish lobby to influence politicians, to influence media, to influence whatever,” said Nkem Anizor, 26, president of a radical new Toronto group called Black Youth Taking Action.
“Because it took just one letter, one press release from B’nai Brith and the firestorm began,” she told a news conference at Ryerson today in Shabazz’s place.
