No replies? No flags?

Has the general American population so subcomed to the "fear" and "terror" tactics of the government that we longer care about the rights that were once a staple in the way of American life?

Do people no longer care about invasion of privacy for the advancement of media advertising?!

Come on people, at least reply that you honestly don't care if Google gathers user's profile information and sells it to the highest bidder, if that's your opinion. But, please don't ignore this issue.

This isn't an invasion of privacy, since the profiles will be anonymous. For example, they might know what kind of games you like to play, how long you play, all the details about that, but WHO YOU ARE remains private. This is why it is okay for them to do this.

A lot of privacy issues out there fall into that gray area. If the people in control are ethical, they won't abuse it. If they're corrupt, they will abuse it. It just depends on who is in control, and despite the fact that it seems like our entire government/corporate nation is corrupt, that really isn't the case. There are still enough checks and balances in the system to control something like this.

hmm

The best way to defeat the supermarket profile system would be to create an account, and duplicate the cards.. Most places use a simple barcode laminated keychain.. scan, print copy, laminate.. 100 people using the same card = hidden data.. though I'd assume the system would realize sooner or later..

Nice!

Great find ... and alarming video. I could have used this about a year and a half ago. I swtiched to Gmail becasue of it's storage capacity and the fact that they allowed attachments up to 10 megs. Too late. Guess I'll have to go back to my old account. Shucks.

Rather than doing something illegal, just create a 'card swap' group. Everyone takes a card and after a month or so, swaps it out with someone else's.

In my case, I don't mind it. Tom Thumb can have a track on what I buy because they give me a discount on my gas purchases. I have no problem with them learning that I buy cat food and mostly organic produce (which encourages them to buy more organic foods) in exchange for a 3 cent discount on my gasoline purchase.

Everything you do gives information to them. Your state may sell your drivers' license info to advertisers (some states do.) Your city may sell your address to advertisers. The phone company may sell your phone number and address.

Everywhere you go on the Internet, cookies get created. Those determine what ads get served to you on many sites.

So, you need to move from your current residence (leaving no forwarding address), move to a place where water comes from a well and your sewage is from a septic tank and you generate your own heat and electricity. Have no phones, no computer/internet (except from local library), and no mail.

And buy with cash only.

sounds like heaven. unfortunately we don't live in that reality. doesn't matter if you do all that, if you're still living in the U.S. they'll eventually track you down.

What is illogical is they will profile people playing games which are more or less designed by other corporations which also profiled some of the people or use family games to sell family products and so on.

When you are so big as Google you can create new market segments, why limit yourself by statistics of what segments are already there. Besides it's not that hard to imagine what people want and spending millions to profile them is stupid. Seems at the moment you are enterprise, like google/yahoo/msn you lose all the good ideas and just copy stuff from others and do usual boring and limited enterprise stuff. Just look how unoriginal they all became - calendar, answers, photos and some of the social bookmarking is all they can do.

Btw, if they decide to psychologically profile this game (actually mod for q3), they will realize they can only sell them rocket launchers.

What I'm wondering is how Google will acquire this data. And whether or not this is legal. It states on that page:

It says information could be retrieved from previous game details saved on memory cards: "Such saved information may be thought of state information, and offers a valuable source of information to the advertisers."

How the hell is it legal for Google to copy the information located on your memory card? Isn't this the same thing as stealing. How they are going to acquire this information is my biggest concern. They are accessing your information on your device without your authorization. Seems like stealing to me.

If someone walked into your house. Took your memory card out of your Playstation 2 and walked off with it would that not be stealing? If someone hacked into your computer and copied information pertaining to your online gaming habits is that not a crime? Indexing web sites is one thing, but illegally accessing information stored on your computer is another.

This is illegal and I hope Google gets sued for it. How a patent could be issued for this type of thing boggles my mind.

When you play online games there are no cookies created. How then is Google going to be able to acquire all of this information. And with consoles what gives Google the right to go snooping through your files and information?

It's google. They're no telling what type of technology they've deleveloped. They've been in constant controversy with the government in the past, but seem to have worked all that out.

There was even a controvesy over their hybrid maps being an invasion of privacy, but we all know that we no longer have privacy.

I'm sure with the Playstation 3 and Xbox360 having online capability and a hard drive storage, they'd have no problem retrieving data from your home console. I think they could even find a way to retreive your memory card data if you have online access with your Playstation 2. Anyway ... yes, I believe it to be an invasion of my privacy, but apparently Google and our government do not agree.

I knew this from stretch and by the fact that it accomodates lots of concepiracy blank minded people and they wouldn't bother by asking "why". Facebook has got a lot to do with the money making scheme in the fremasonary world.
