In Illinois, you're never too young to own a gun.

That's what one father found out, when he registered his 10-month-old son for a Firearm Owner's Identification Card.

Daily Southtown columnist Howard Ludwig registered his son —- Howard David Ludwig, nicknamed "Bubba" — online after the child's grandfather bought him a gun shortly after the baby's birth. Ludwig chronicled the road to gun ownership in a story that appeared in the Southtown on Sunday.

"Anyone who wants to own a firearm or purchase a firearm needs a FOID card," Ludwig told FOX News. "I applied for one of these for my son. Now ironically he can’t buy a gun until he’s 18 years old, but if he wants to own one -- which he does thanks to Grandpa -- he needs one of these cards anyhow."

The ID card, complete with a photo of the tot, allows the child to own a firearm and ammunition, and legally transport an unloaded weapon, even though Bubba has yet to learn how to walk.

More to the story in the link. Wonder what all of the pro and anti gun people will think when they hear articles like this after the VT incidents. I personally think this is crazy. Even if taught utmost responsibility, cmon, the kid's 10 months old. At least give it several years.

If the gun was a gift, and he legally needs to apply to own it, and all this doesn't break any law, I don't really see what's wrong with it.

Although understandable to me, I think the
whole concept of Illinois residents having to
have a firearms id card is slightly bizarre.

Its a fine example of bereucratic bullcrap.

The boys grandfather buys him his first gun but somewhere along the way a group pushed for some owners ID that apparently serves no purpose and means absolutely nothing. The ID isnt tied to concealed carry, training requirements, saftey classes or even age. Its just a stupid piece of paper created no doubt to pacify some anti-gun group that, by the looks of the ID, didnt know what they were talking about.

Or, its just another tax their state can levy. Like a tea stamp or paper stamp. You want to own a gun? You have to buy a gun stamp.

Whatever. The kid has his first gun and I hope he and his family have many happy years of shooting.

why does a 10 month old need a first gun?
this is kind of an irresponsible gift that shouldn't have been given to this kid. hell, i think we should sync up the age to own a gun with the driving age in each state. both can kill people.

What I think is funny is that people think a 10 month old baby has a gun in the crib. What if the grandfather had bought the baby land instead? Or opened him a savings account? (yes, firearms can be a longterm investment.)
If anything this high lights how ignorant many gun laws are.

I can see it now. Grandpa buys a gun, loads it with bullets, places it in babys crib, says "Here you go kiddo" and walks away.

This stupid 'permit' is just a tax. Nothing more.

I started target shooting at like 7 or 8.

I don't see what the big deal is with this, there are no age limits on Firearms ID cards in Illinois. Sure the father applied as a joke, but by law the state must issue the permit, so they did.

maybe grandpaw got his first gun from his grandpaw woulkd like to carry on family tradition but is afraid he won't live to child is old enough to use it.
my grandpaw bought me my first rifle when i was 3 but it was kept in attic gun rack till i was old enough to learrn how to shoot it.
