Ex-police officer won't be charged for Pot Brownies

www.yorkdispatch.com

DEARBORN, Mich. -- A former police officer will avoid criminal charges despite admitting he took marijuana from criminal suspects and, with his wife, baked it into brownies.

The police department's decision not to pursue a case against former Cpl. Edward Sanchez left a bad taste in the mouth of at least one city official, who vowed to investigate.

An interesting quote from the article:

Sanchez told an emergency dispatcher he thought he and his wife were overdosing on marijuana.

"I think we're dying," he said. "We made brownies and I think we're dead, I really do.

While funny, if this had not been an officer of the law, and his wife would there have been criminal charges?

If there is such a thing as being charged for being incredibly stupid, I think they should charge this couple, and make sure they receive the maximum penalty.

Oh boy this sort of thing just cheeses me off to no end. It's like when one of GWB's daughters was caught drunk driving or senatorial children get caught with coc aine -- they get off because of who they are and their connections. The law needs to be equally applied or dismantled completely.

The cop should lose his job. He is supposed to uphold the law and set an example, and here he is getting away with something that some long-haired 19 year old college student would be facing time for.

Makes me want to go

Were any of the pot brownies recovered? Or any remaining pot?

If not, it would be hard to charge them. It was probably a small amount anyway.

I guess he did lose his job though, as it says he's an ex-officer.

The stuff stays in your urine for up to 30 days. But a hair follicle test will not lie.

Or maybe he was one of those shaven-headed bald cops. LOL

Unless you're on parole or probation, I don't think they can do anything to you for testing positive.

You have to be in physical possession of the controlled substance.

I don't think I agree with that. People are routinely drug tested for employment and to keep employment. I'll have to ask my friend on Berkeley PD if they test him. But he's on a road trip to WA state this weekend, so it'll have to wait until next week.

Yes, you can be fired from a job for testing positive, but you can't be criminally charged unless you're already on some type of probation due to an earlier offense.

Ah, now I see the distinction. I guess I haven't had enough coffee yet this morning.

OMG - I thought this was just a wind-up bit of news. I think in this case that fact that he has lost not only his job, but (I would imagine) also any chance of working in law enforcement in any capacity is gunna screw him more than a night in the cells. It may not go on his personnal records but it will always show on his police records as to why he lost his job.

Also if his picture has appeared anywhere, the locals will know the kind of moron he is, the guy's gunna have to move to live this one down.

I bow to the extreme stupidity of this man, he should run for president.

The recording of the 911 tape is hilarious. He said time was going really really slow and he thought they were dead. Then he asks what the score was on some sport game

'We made brownies and I think we're dead, I really do'.

Too bad that woman dying in California with terminal illness isn't able to reef some leaf to save her life. It was the Rasta gods, smacking their bottoms.

It happened 1 year ago, I know the officer personally. They did not recover any contraband and he resigned.

This has really hurt the image of the Dearborn Police Dept. who has an excellent police department, but time will pass and people will forget.
