Here is something for those who say illegals pay more in taxes than they take in benefits.
Just keep telling yourself their here to work. Guess who is going to pay? Thats right the "gringos" But the cost of a salad will go up you say, care to guess how much your taxes are going to go up?. Wait I know, Dr.Rector's figures are all wrong, well lets hope and pray they are. But just in case there not, have your checkbook at the ready. Good luck.

I live in West Texas. I can tell you that this guy is presenting ill conceived arguements.

I manage a 300 seat call center. I have job openings for 200 bilingual employees that I cannot fill and it hurts our relationship with our client (a major, worldwide cell phone company). Know anyone who can fill these jobs other than guest workers? If you do, send them my way...we pay $9.50 an hour to start just to activate cell phones and do credit checks and change of responsibility/port ins.

While you're at it, find us some folks to staff the 8 restaurants that have closed this year (yes, 2007 only) because they couldn't staff the restaurant. The area isn't growing very quickly, compared to other parts of Texas....yet we are still over a barrell. What is the cost in lost GDP from failure to have adequate labor to sustain growth?

The problem with most macroeconomists is that they are hung up on service sector economies and fail to see the overall impacts, both short and long term.

And when you involve "hot button" issues, you end up with an overpoliticized rendition of analysis instead of a truthful and honest assessment. It can be difficult to identify the Xenophobes.

I agree that there will be a disproportion in the amount of benefits paid vs the amount of tax. But look at the larger picture, the overall impact. It will take a generation or two to get these new Americans propped up (it always does...2-3 generations to make Americans out of the immigrants), but when they do what is the benefit to our nation then? How about the short term benefit by supporting the growth needed to continue improving overall annual GDP and lifestyle's of American citizens? Do you think that there are a bunch of Americans building those malls that you shop in? Don't you realize that the cost of construction is too prohibitive if we use only American labor, of which there is none currently? Should we retard our growth only to please a few racists and xenophobes?

There is nothing wrong with his arguments,I believe everything he's saying will come true,I hope I'm wrong time will tell.

I am not hiring illegals. I didn't say that. I did say that illegals meet many needs of our growing economy.

Let me ask you about the law: do you think it is finite? is it set in stone? Or can we change it?

Don't you think that we should do what is best for our nation? I believe that sustained growth is what is good for our nation, and the world. The problem in, Americans are not populating quickly enough to fill the job needs. The retiring baby boomers have created a HUGE need for nurses and nurses aides. There are many, many drains on our labor force if viewed on a macro economic scale.

Who is going to fill these jobs? Who is going to keep food on the table by harvesting our crops? Are you willing to work for $6 an hour, 12 hours a day? Know anyone who is? If so, send them down...there are fields that can use the help. Otherwise, I am interesting to hear your solution. The law is a relative subject, and you cannot hang an arguement on that alone. It can be changed, and should be when it serves the people. So, the people need to be served...what else can we do?

If you want to get in the drug business, you should start with hemp. Another thing that is good for our nation. Cotton is destroying our soil, and the return on investment is becoming smaller and smaller in recent years. Hemp is what we need to revitalize our soil and our textile crops. But that is a different story...

6 dollars an hour for a 12 hr day? Thats not a worker, thats a slave. The problem is these workers are being exploited, not employed. Any savings are not passed to the consumer, they go into the pocket. And for these people to come over here for that little money, well it goes to show just how bad mexico is. The drug thing was not ment to be taken seriously

I would like to chime in on this.
Both of the formentioned points are valid. Illegale immigration is wrong in all aspects as it shows a disrespect for the laws of the land, and at the same time they do fill a void and a need for the labor market. The problem is this, how do you keep a country safe, when safety is the number one issue of the country. Yes things are bad in Mexico, but are they any better here, and what about the explotation of the migrant workers, who will do just about anything for a buck. I know that this is a large problem but the solution is going to hurt worse than the problem. If we continue to ignore the problem, what will we say if there is ever a Terrorist attack on the US and how bad will that attack be? And if we tighten how much of an impact will it have on the economy? Personally I think that the strikes that was done would have gotten the attention of the Government, if it had actually continued on for more than a day. If you consider the contributions to the country by the illegale immigrants into the economy, then the question would be this, how long would it take for congress to actually effect changes, when it started to hurt? And as the person who runs a business how loudly will you yell to get them to do something about it?

Very nice arguement.

This is a choiice of balancing two evils/goods. We need sustained economic growth. The savings ARE passed on to us. Otherwise we would use cane sugar instead of beet sugar more in this country.

Catch 22, for sure.
