How do you get to the Moon? The same way you get to Carnegie Hall...

Practice!

The purpose of having the Gemini dock with the Agena was to develop, refine and practice the skills and manuevers that would be utilized when the Apollo would be docking with the LEM.

Orbital docking, now considered so routine that many Russian spacecraft can do it automatically, was a "never before attempted" manuever back in the days of Gemini.

A necessary skill to achieve the goal of a lunar mission, it was considered by NASA safer (and cheaper!) to develop the methods to be used, in Earth orbit, using the most advanced vehicle in NASA's stable at the time.

History is your friend.

The purpose was to practice docking with another vehicle/object in orbit, as it was never done before until then. You have to learn and practice it some how. They also practiced EVA's as well.

How thick should it be to "look safe"?

Sorry wasnt even thinking about apollo for some reason.

But those doors are very thin imo, should be thicker. Look at this airplane

Man I didn't realise Gemini was so small, its like a space gokart! It reminds me of the french cycle cars of the 1900 - 1920 era. Can't wait untill they build a Ferari WE can use!
