If its a metaphor, My best guess is...
The cup is something we can all drink from, and doing so will give us ever lasting life. This is not literal.
In other words, the cup (like the bread) represents the word and message of Christ, something anyone can listen to, practice, and pass on(ie drink and
share). Doing so allows us to become one with the Father, rise up, become enlightened and enter heaven, and be with the lord. Whether that means
heaven on earth (living happiness and peace) or afterwards, thats for you to decide, either way its a message.
If a last-super occured, and the speech happened (bread and blood speech) then there was probably an actual cup (like a prop used by public speakers)
that Jesus used to teach his followers with that night, this is my blood, yada yada yada. The message is what was important, not the actual clay (or
metal) cup.
If the cup survived and was keep as a momento, is not important.
The story of the actual grail, seems to me to be sort of middle age disinformation. Something to rally the troops if you will, something that was
prolly pushed by human greed (unchrist like). The promise of eternal life if drinking a cup, is something pushed by human fear of death, greed and
oversteps Christ's message.
If drinking from the cup, gave you eternal life on earth, that takes away from Christ's message, of the importance living a good honest life, for the
next life.
The ultimate treasure if you will, likeThe fountain of youth. The ultimate possession if you will, which really is against Christ's message. (ie
Easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, then a rich man to enter Heaven). Earthly stuff means nothing.
Just a metaphor mis-used to push people during the Crusades, that built on a life of its on, that in the end is not very Christ like.
